Did I get a defective paint job or does Toyota's painting just suck that bad?

My truck sees a lot of off-road use, to include trails with small branches hanging over them from time to time. We try to keep the trails trimmed back but that is a never-ending job. With past vehicles (Jeep, Chevy, Ford) these branches have never scratched my vehicle but I washed my Tacoma today and it is loaded with scratches. In addition to those scratches it looks like every single thing that gets kicked up on the road results in a scratch or chip in the paint.

Aside from the paint and some fairly minor 'issues' I like the truck a lot. Just wondering if this thin/cheap paint work is standard for Toyota, which I guess could be expected given the pricing...they have to cut corners to keep prices 'low' (compared to other makers).

I spent a couple of hours waxing the truck today and about 50% of the scratches buffed out. The paint doesn't look defective, no pealing or anything, just a cheap paint job. Oh-well...I guess I'll just have to double down on clearing the trails and try to minimize further damage.

The clear coat is definitely soft. The trick is to scratch it up a bunch and then stop caring about the paint. That's what I did.

Typical. I deal with the exact same conditions and the only thing I have going for me is silver paint. Tends to disguise all but the deepest scratches / dents better than the dark colors. All the overgrown pig trails I use during hunting season wreck havoc on the paint - I do what I can washing / waxing, but ultimately there's nothing I can do about it.

Basically the approach I'm taking at this point, haha. My next truck, whatever brand it might be, will be anything but black.

My blue Tacoma was the same way, one of the reasons I switched to white on the current one.

Mine is silver and paint chips extremely easy. I also have significant fade on top of the mirrors and slight fading on bumpers. I wash and wax frequently but the paint seems thin and very easily damaged. Very disappointed in the durability of the paint.

I have a 2007 4Runner and paint is much thicker and seems much more durable and scratch & chip resistant.
