very true.. but then why even bother with a nut if its that stuck. get an extractor, which would be my second option after the vice grips. its broke... needs to come out.

The problem is that I put the reinforced hardware into the tailgate. The threaded insert that the screw is [about halfway] threaded into has come somewhat loose, and is now spinning freely within its hole in the tailgate. So using vice grips to turn the screw actually just turns the threaded insert itself, and doesn't unscrew anything whatsoever. I could get the screw out if I took the tailgate reinforcement off completely, I'm just worried that some more of the inserts might start spinning freely as well!

The threads looks pretty clean to me. With the reinforcement plate out of the way it should expose more threads and also eliminate the possibility of damaging the brand new product. You will get a more secure grip if you can get both nuts on their then you can with vice grips.

You can use an ez out to remove the screw. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/piece-Easy-Screw-Bolt-Extractor/dp/B0002UJNWE

Had this happen once. Used a dremel to carve a line in the head and used a flathead screwdriver to remove it. But i assume vice grips would work too.

That was my original idea but the insert that the screw is screwed into is loose and spinning freely - spinning the screw (by flathead or vicegrip) does nothing haha

Remove the tailgate skin, cut off bolt and rivnut at where the rivnut meets the sheetmetal, then use a new rivnut, but notch the sheetmetal where it goes in. This seats it so it cannot spin. Also crank down on the rivnut so it really grabs the metal.

A standard 6" wide ammo box fits perfectly behind the seats of a double cab, FYI.

Is that our tailgate skin? It doesn't appear to be. Just asking because of the fitment issue. If it's ours, I'd like to get it resolved.j

Vice grips are one of the corner stones of the modern American civilization.
