I taught myself to drive. In my dad's 1963 Chevy 3/4-ton, step side 283/3-on-the-tree pick up....Driving INSIDE a work shop. @ age 10. Without anyone knowing about it.

First on road (ie "legal" ) was in a 1971 Autocar tri-axle dump truck. Cummins/13-speed Roadranger.

    I prefer automatics.

It wasn't that bad, started them off driving back roads with little traffic and then worked up to driving the beltway around DC. The worst thing was teaching them how to start off on a hill but they really did okay. Maybe I was just braver then, I was definitely more patient!

Blue...you and I are cut from the same cloth. I started working on neighbors farms and learned on all kinds of trucks and tractors. My favorite? a F100 Ranger with a straight six and three on the tree. Not sure kids today even have the opportunity to do what we did.

Dad also had a '66 Chevy 3/4 ton with a 292 6cy and a Borg Warner 4-speed. Stump puller! And a Ford F350 w/390/4sp. My first 4 cars were sticks. First 5 trucks.

I learned on Daytona beach in 1974 with my Dads 72 GMC Jimmy 350ci 4 speed 4x4. I was 14. Learning on the sand was easy on the clutch. We would head down to FLA every February for two weeks.

Vega! A buddy of mine in HS had one, those were the days. Funny what you'll drive in high school, my first car was an indestructible 61 Beetle. My dad rebuilt the engine using a shop manual and got the parts from a JC Whitney catalog. Time for me to step outta the way back machine.

I would rather teach them to start on a hill then drive on the 495 dc beltway. Wait a minute...oh never mind, the traffic dose not move on the beltway.
