Which octane is everyone using

just curious which octane y'all are running.we don't have 91 octane around here,so it's either regular 87 or premium 93.i noticed the manual stated they tested the truck using 91.

I've used 87-93. They all ran the same and got same mileage. So I stick to shell or BP 87 now

 

So far the entire time I've owned a vehicle (Gen 1 Tundra, Gen 2 Tundra, Gen 3 Tacoma) I've never pressed anything but the regular 87 button and I've yet to have an issue with that.

 

I'm going to try and test everything we have local, both with and without ethanol. I'm using 93 ethanol free right now and I can't tell a bit of difference over 87 ethanol free. Both of the ethanol free fill ups (I'm on #3 ethanol free now) did a little better than the 87 with ethanol for MPG. I'm going to try a few runs of 93 with ethanol next. I haven't really done the math for cost effectiveness yet. I need more data.

I'm going to try to have a few runs in both a hot and cold weather with both grades of ethanol free I can get and all three grades of ethanoled gas. Plus I plan on doing an experiment with name brand premium fuel vs cheapie premium fuel.

 

I used both 87 and 93. It seemed that I got better mileage with the 93. I never saw a difference when I had my Tundra...go figure.

 

I use the cheapest gas I can find because it makes my truck go. That's why I put gas in there.

 

87...scientifically anything else is a waste of money. But if running something higher makes you happier, go for it.

 

Always ran the cheapest, until I tried some 91 EF (last week).
Gotta say....the truck runs better and is more efficient on it. Not sure if it is the 91 or the EF. I am sure the combination of both help.
Going to run some 91 ethanol just to see what results I get.

 

If you get the same mileage with 87 and 93, it's a no-brainer. 93 is average $0.40 more expensive/gallon, so in a full tank of 21 gallons that's around $8, which will buy around 3.5 gallons at the current price here in Georgia. To make it simple, if you average 20 miles/gal in your driving average, a 20 gal tank will give you a 400 mile range, whereas 23.5 gals will give you a 470 mile range. So, basically, using 87 versus 93 is like getting 3.5 miles/gal more.

 

What area are you located?

I note you say "tested". Is that what the manual calls for or???

 

I use what ever is cheapest.

 

Ive been using 87 since day one and I have gotten Toyota's advertised Mpg for over 3,000 miles now.

 

If your manual say run 87 I'd say run 87. Any body who runs anything high is stupid and has to much money. They obviously have no idea how fuel works and they assume they know more then the engineers that designed the engine.

BTW, here in my part of Georgia non-ethanol gas is significantly more expensive than ethanol 93. I use it for lawn equipment and power washers, where they be idle for months and you run the risk that the ethanol will come out of solution and generate water. But if you are not going to let your truck sit for long periods of time, there is not significant advantage in using non-ethanol gas. Also, you minimize the risk of getting water in your tank if you keep it topped off. Less water vapor pressure in the tank will minimize ethanol conversion to water.
Maybe the non-ethanol will feel like more horsepower (I know my Porsche sounded different with non-ethanol) but I don't have plans to win any light-to-light drag races in my Tacoma.

 

I'm in south georgia and the ethanol free is a good bit more expensive. After this tank I'm going to run a couple of tanks of ethanol 93 and compare the cost per mile.

 

Around here 85 is regular, 87 is mid grade, and I don't know what premium is because I never buy it. My truck drinks a regular diet of 85, but I've been out of town and forced to buy 87 because that was the lowest grade available. If there was a difference the seat of my pants couldn't tell, but my wallet sure could.

 

to the "I run 93" crowd turning this bit of math the other way around: if a tank of 93 doesn't take you further than 470 miles you are wasting money. If there was anything to running higher grade gas than what the manufacturer recommends everyone would be running 93. Me, I chose to spend my money on fun stuff.

 

With so much negativity does it make ya wonder if he and many others even own a 3rd Gen or do they work for another Auto Manufacturer ?

 

octane rating has nothing to do with mpg. it has everything to do with how much energy is required to burn it. so unless you put a turbo on your tacoma you are wasting money putting 93 in it. and theoretically leaving excess unburnt fuel behind.
