Which octane is everyone using

Thats right. energy can neither be created or destroyed it can only be changed from one for to another.

 

Ethanol-free gas is what's causing the increased MPG.

 

Depends on the car! I know that when I had the Cayman the car sounded different (read: better) with the non-ethanol and I pushed it more and actually decreased my MPG .

 

Yea I feel you..I did use the search option.searched "2016 Fuel"..and nothing of the sort showed up..Happy Sunday to all ha.

 

I'm located around Louisiana.manual just stated a minimum octane rating,forgot the exact number but it had some extra print stating something like "truck tested using 91".didnt say 91 was required minimum

 

Octane determines the pressure (compression) fuel can withstand prior to detonation. Performance engines with higher compression ratios require higher octane fuels (and the manufacturer will specify that in the manual and often near the fuel filler door). Unless your stock engine is experiencing knocking or pinging with a low octane fuel (premature detonation), there is no need to move to a higher octane rating. Buying more expensive gas 'just because' is simply a waste of money.

89 minimum. Truck pings with 87 in it.

In the winter i run 93 for less ethanol content

 

It calls for using top tier 87 octane so why pay more for premium?

 

Completely agree, but arguing this point with people that are adamant it makes a difference is futile. I don't even try anymore

 

Horrible idea. AV gas will clog your injectors. It has an additive for high altitude

You must be referring to this: "87 (Research octane number 91) or higher". RON is just another method to measure.

 

Gotcha, I'm one state over in Mississippi so similar operating conditions. I've owned several Tacomas (to no 3rd gen) and other Toyota and other manufacture vehicles and always only use(d) the recommended and never had any issue and no noted difference in performance.

 

It helps to run it for a period of time. The ECU has to figure out the fuel has changed and adjust in order for it to do anything different.

I run 91. The price difference even in Kommiefornia is ~$4 a tank if you're putting in 20 gallons and I like the way it drives better.

Octane and fuel quality are not synonymous. Additives, detergents and other 'secret fuel alchemy' vary from supplier to supplier. Exxon 87 has a different blend than Chevron's 87 and so forth. Any major supplier is pretty much going to give you quality fuel regardless of the fuel's octane rating.

Because octane is just...well, octane.

There is a fuel station in town (Helena) that has zero ethanol always. That's where I get all of my fuel. Especially critical for chainsaws, small engines etc..
