Yup, was 3 quarts short on tranny fluid.
I've heard of 1, 1.5, but not this much.
It drove ok before I took it in....

I have had my truck for a little over a month and was on vacation the last three weeks. I notice the transmission racing a couple of times, before it engaged and it hesitated when shifting from forward to reverse, etc. My CA made an appointment for me and the SA told me they have had several trucks in with similar problems. I was one quart low and just picked it up yesterday. I was very happy with my treatment at Big Island Toyota in Kona.

3 quarts is a lot wow. I sure hope dealers aren't over filling peoples transmissions though with all this going on...

Looks like you should be going after Toyota to give you a "life-time" warranty on that (now crappy) transmission... (I'd like to see what happens with a drain/flush and look at all the nice little bits of metal that's gonna come out...!!)

You should get a replacement free of charge from Toyota man....!!

Wow man, super low. I was 1/2 qt low when they checked it Friday. I can't believe Toyota hasn't made a statement yet.

I'd definitely reach out to Toyota Care and request a free extended Platinum Warranty of some kind, all they can say is no.

I got a 125k 8 year platinum warranty for my troubles. You should *at least* get that.

3 quarts low seems like it needs to be replaced.

Anyone who does any casual research online about the gen 3 Tacoma is going to see tons of complaints pertaining to low transmission fluid. It's pretty pathetic people come to Toyota for their solid QDR reputation yet this issue is so widespread. And no peep from Toyota.

Maybe they don't want to burn their transmission maker until they can source a new supplier or work out a deal with them.

It's not going to do anyone any good if the supplier says fine, screw it. No more transmissions.

Can someone tell me why the newer autotrans have the sealed transmission, no dipstick? That happened around 2005, right? What is the advantage?

This has nothing to do with the transmission maker. Toyota is the one that did not add more fluid after options were added to the subassembly at their factory.

To be honest, it's so regular folks have to go to the dealership or a shop for service.

I thought that is why they put 2 dozen sensors on the engine for.

If there were accurate sensors on the transmission fluid level, people would be happy. There are NO sensors and it is causing grief.

I do miss the simplicity of the old '90 with torsion bar suspension, all four shocks came off and on in 30 minutes with a 17mm box wrench. That thing was pretty decent offroad, I remember driving that thing in reverse for about two miles on a slippery clay road when nobody else could get out. I tried it in forward then remembered my old Granddad telling me if you can't climb a hill in forward gear try it in reverse.
