Question for those with manual trans

Say you're sitting in your running Tacoma, in neutral at a stop. You had the clutch disengaged while taking it out of gear. You release the clutch pedal. Do you get a fairly obvious droning sound?

I know to some degree this would probably be normal, and I think mine has mostly always done this. But I'm just curious, because I've never heard droning quite so loud and obvious in any other manual transmission vehicle. I guess what I really need is just to hear some others so I can compare.

 

It would help if you listed what type of tacoma you have.
Old, new, i-4, v-6.

 

And a location of the drone?? Right under your shifter?? Just in the tunnel? from the engine compartment??

Metallic tone to it at all?? high/mid/low tone pitch??

It's a 2007 Access Cab, V6, 6spd.

 

No metallic tone. I would say low pitch.

While I can't say for certain right now precisely where the drone is coming from, it's not coming from the engine compartment. I'm not a vehicle expert, but I think it's probably a fairly natural sound. With the clutch pressed in, nothing is turning between the clutch and rear end. When I release the clutch in neutral, I'm now turning some shafts in the transmission, correct?

My only concern is that it seems to be a bit more loud and noticeable than other manual transmissions.

 

WIthout hearing it I can't say for sure- but yeah...IDK what other types of manual trans you've driven but going from my Scion tC to the Taco is night and day difference.
Sports car- nice tight, quiet, positive shifts.
Truck- Kinda loose and more forgiving than the tC.

Keep an ear on it to make sure it doesn't change...and you should be good to go.
