I was curious if any of you, who have replaced your own brake shoes, can tell me where to buy the CORRECT brake shoes for my truck? I would rather not go through the dealer, simply because they are so expensive (~$175). I guess I will if I absolutely have to though.

I have purchased two sets, and they have both been wrong. Neither set had the holes for the adjusting arm pivot (staked pin) or the tab that is supposed to protrude through the rear brake shoe on each side of the vehicle. I don't have a camera, otherwise I would include a picture.

I purchased both sets online and I ensured each time that the truck information was correct, so I don't know what I am doing wrong.

    Any suggestions besides the dealership?

If you're anywhere near a NAPA auto parts store, go there. IMO they're the only store that's worth a shit anymore as far as knowledgeable staff and quality parts.

EDIT: NAPA's website is a POS, I don't recommend ordering online, just go to the store.

Shoes boxed wrong if the holes were missing .

Someone gave back the wrong cores and it was missed.

I will second go to your local Napa I had great luck with Brake hardware from them.

This is probably the issue... PartsGeek and RockAuto do not ask for a VIN. They usually give two or three options on vehicle configuration (PreRunner, SRunner, DLX and sometimes Base). I am honestly not sure what the difference is between DLX and base. What does DLX even stand for, deluxe or something? I know for sure I do not have a prerunner or SRunner.

Does anyone know the difference? Base or DLX?

Here's the set I got for my '02 TRD, XTra Cab. Gonna put them on next month when hopefully more work and tires get done. Hope this helps.

I just went to NAPA and had the set ordered... SAME THING! No slot for the adjuster lever or the staked pin to hold it in place! I see no way to make these shoes work with my setup.

    What am I doing wrong???

Has anyone else had this problem? I know I am giving them the correct information (3.4/4X4/5spd etc...), so why am I consistently getting the wrong shoes? I will get a picture up of what I am describing. This is driving me nuts...

What I have found with the rear drums is the difference between 5 lug and 6 lug drums. The diameter for the drums is different and hence the shoes are different as well. I recently ordered my drums, shoes and hardware kit from Rock Auto. The order worked out fine keeping in mind that I was after the larger diameter 6 lug parts for my PreRunner.

The OE part # for the rear shoes is 04495-35250. Have wherever you get them cross reference it and see if that helps.

I just did the brakes on my 02 double cab. I ordered the Wagner ThermoQuiet PAB589 shoes off Amazon for $30 delivered. Installation was pretty easy, except for the E-brake lever arm was rusted solid. It took me longer to free those than the rest of the brake job.

Thank you... THANK YOU! This is exactly what I needed. I took this number to Car Quest and they just happened to have the set I needed in stock. $21, cheap!

I am still not sure where I screwed up when buying the other sets, but at least I have the right set now.

Thanks again to all who replied.

For anybody interested, the reason I kept receiving the wrong brake shoes is, I was apparently buying the brake shoes for the PreRunner. Not sure how this kept happening, as I specifically mentioned 4X4 all three times I purchased these.

The difference between the two sets is, the adjustment lever for the star-wheel adjuster goes over the parking brake post on the PreRunner. The adjustment lever has it's own staked pin on the rear brake shoe for the 4X4 models.

So... PreRunner brakes will not work on the 4X4's. Now I know.
