What I find interesting is how far the responsibility for not hitting the head has been transferred to the player delivering the hit. Years ago when the NHL targeted dangerous spot hits and hits from behind the onus was still on the player, at the NHL level, not to turn his back to the other player while he was initiating the hit. Yes, at the lower levels the onus was on the player delivering the hit but at the pros it was, at best, a split responsibility between the two players to ensure a legal hit could and was delivered.

With the hit to the head rule and the way it's being enforced there is none of that shared responsibility. I do see a time when players begin to use it to their advantage. I mean, why not skate with your head down if it's going to draw a penalty? Pro's are smart that way and dumb when thinking about their future health.

No one is saying that he is a terrible player. He did make a dumb split second decision though to keep his head down as he entered the attacking zone. That is something that you are taught not to do basically from the age when you can pick up a stick. Head up, use your peripheral vision to handle the puck, keep skating.... all of those things he failed to do there and I can tell you that the assistant coach told him that after the game in not so nice a way.

Head never should have been down, especially considering that carrying the puck across an opponents blue line makes you the most targeted on the ice.

You guys act like he just skates around the whole game staring at his feet.

Ever look down while driving? WTF?! Didn't you learn to keep your eyes on the road when you had your learners permit?

I agree. I have been watching defenseman at the pro level protect the puck by turning their backs out and facing the boards for years now. The idea of it looks asinine, but clearly they do it because they know that oncoming forecheckers are not legally allowed to hit them...when a stupid play is a smart play? Seems to run against all that is instinctual

Regardless of hockey fundamentals, personal opinions, or what we learned in peewee hockey, Marleau's hit was what the NHL considers an illegal hit to the head. It drew a penalty, as it should have. If this were not the finals, the NHL would have suspended him.

If you asked Kane about the hit what do you think he would say...

"I should of had my head up"

It actually amazes me at how pro's sacrifice their bodies for the sake of their team. Hockey and Football especially.

I mean. Anyone other than a goalie diving in front of a slap shot? Instinct would tell you not to. It's pretty impressive.

The look on his face says it all. Haha he knows damn well he should've had his head up crossing the blue line like that

Marleau watched Rust skate in with his head down and still managed to hit him in the head. One would think that would easily a head shot avoidable.

I take slap shots to unpadded area's all the time for minimum wage just for the love of the game. I am a linesman at the higher levels of minor hockey. For a million a year... yeah I think I could go out in full gear and take the odd shot block in an uncomfortable spot.

My point was I wasn't singling anyone out. Saying a guy needs to go back to the basics because he may or may not have looked down for a split second. Is ridiculous to me.

Nobody is saying he needs to go backkk to the basics. Just that what he did goes against hockey basics.

It's not like anybody thinks he's a terrible player because he had his head down for a little too long. We're simply saying that in this situation he is at least partially responsible for the hit because he had his head down.
