It was the kids.

I'm not sure which of my kids put them on the truck, but during idle times, waiting on me to buckle them in, they rearrange them and laugh about it. I like it cause it brings them joy.

One of my co-workers noticed them, and couldn't believe they stay attached. Dunno about off road, but they hold great for pavement pounding.

 

GMRS? Nice! You're making me feel not so bad about posting pictures and broadcasting APRS status msgs of me being on freqs I shouldn't be on.

This is a seriously sweet setup though. I haven't graduated past velcro and a magnet mount for my phone.

 

Thanks a lot. I'm going to explore using magnets attached to the Ram mounts for the remote radio heads. That's the silver thing pictured under the Kenwood.

Ideally this is a list of what I want to securely mount

• Nexus 5 phone which uses a suction mount in the left corner glass and works well.. No plans to change it.
• Nexus 7 tablet which I want to mount in a vertical position.
• Garmin device.
• Remote head for VHF/UFH radio 1
• Remote head for VHF/UFH radio 2
• Remote head for
• Uniden Scanner. This might be a pain in the ass as they don't make remote heads for their stuff anymore...

When I was in DV in December 2015, I made a 10 mile contact with an off-road group on MURS near the Racetrack. They informed me that they had not seen the legendary Black Taco I was searching for. @HBMurphy

I enjoy all the radio services, MURS, GRMS, 2M, 440 etc. they are all great.

A while back I picked up a GMRS license so my wife and kids can legally use the radios on those freq. I built a base station on a 20' pole. I can talk very reliably all around town. We'll continue to use it until my wife gets her ham ticket, them we'll probably migrate to 2M simplex.

 

Maybe you can get away with so many screens because you're in one of those massive 2nd gens. I have a phone, a 350, and Sirius/XM radio and I feel like I'm out of space to put anymore screens.

I haven't kept up on the ham thread, have you gotten much of a chance to interface the new 100DR to any devices?

I don't care about specific legalities since I'm personally keeping all my outputs to 5W or less when possible and I'm always 20+ miles and around the bend from any real civilization. But, I thought I read that you had to use GMRS licensed radios on GMRS frequencies? What's the real deal?

 

Not sure I'll be able to accomplish what I want to with electric gadgets. 2nd gen has space issues too. And I don't have HF rig, or scanner yet.

I'll write more about the 100DR in the Amateur radio thread, but to be short, I've put it through some paces, and there are definitely some bugs.

Read deal is type acceptance is a boogy man that radio police nuts will throw at you to scare you. The truth is FCC enforces type acceptance on manufactures, not individuals.

I use a Panavise for for my phone with Ram X-Grip. Works pretty well.

I also stream navigation from my phone to my Pioneer DVD...a great option if you don't want to spend big bucks on navigation HU (I'm sure you know that).

 

Hey Crom, I've been watching your thread for a while now and love the content and updates. My factory lug nuts are beginning to deform and I'm curious how well the ones you purchased off ebay are holding up?

Lol One thing is certain - If it was between 25th and 1st, I was there and unless things change in a very big way, that's where I can be found that time of year.

Did this when truck was 3-months old.

The pictures are very helpful to my memory, but I'm thinking I need to do this again with an aim at studying the materials and construction.

I wonder if wifey will remember.

They are solid. All steel construction. The black paint gets a little beat up on the points, but that's the worst of it. I recommend them.

Hooray for Death Valley! I love that place.

 

Headrest Paracord Grab Handles

I installed these yesterday.

My oldest kid (5.5 y/o) now, really loves them. I ordered them right away when I saw her grabbing the head rest stanchions to pull herself out of the car seat. My youngest likes hers too. I think it makes them feel good when I do something to better their experience in the truck.


They're going to get used a lot... I'll report back in a year on their longevity. They look well made so I do expect them to last a long time.


They are Bartact brand, found them on Amazon. Didn't do a ton of research on these things, just found some that looked good and ordered.

 

I like the webbing loops. Have not seen those yet.

 

those are a nice touch, as that should help them last waaaaayyyyy longer, paracord is great stuff, but that outer sleeve on the non-military paracord tends to disintegrate fairly fast under abrasion.

 

I had the same ones. Just took the front ones off as well and am enjoying having like new seats. The rest of the interior shows a little wear so I'm not sure if I'm going to replace them? Just ordered 6112's. Cant wait to get them on. My 5100's are toast

 

I use Bluetooth. I could use the USB, but that's used by my iPod.

Also, the Panavise is great, but can interfere with the passenger if the seat is forward or if the passenger is tall.

 

Too funny. We did the same. The back seat covers were in great shape, so I left those alone. The 6112's are going to be good!

Good to know on the Panavice. I think I'm going to try the Tech Deck. I occasionally do send audio from my phone to the head unit with the 3.5 mm line-in jack. I investigated doing it with a Bluetooth to 3.5 mm converter, but all I could find in market place was junk that people said failed in a month or so. So I just keep using the cable.

A TW member made a pair for me and my six year old loves them too as they are just for him to use. I plan to see about putting a second pair into the Land Cruiser for him as well. Searching my subscribed messages doesn't turn up the thread but I know there is one here.

 

I might know a guy that's handy with paracord.
