So, is this the procedure here we should be doing to address low fluid? I'm confused... with the method described above, it doesn't sound like so much as a check as just a fill. However, it sounds that a level "check" isn't really needed since it sounds like the proper level of fluid is reached once the fluid starts to come out of the overflow port.

Anyway, am I missing something? This doesn't sound like a very involved process. Bottom line.. is this all I need to do to remedy the truck being low on ATF by a quart or two ?

What I and other people have done is take your truck to your dealer and tell them that there is hesitation when shifting from reverse to drive when the truck is cold and that the truck clunks into drive. I told them that the truck seems to not shift smoothly either. I told the service advisor that I was concerned about the transmission fluid level and would like a technician to manually check it by bringing it to temperature. Even if you're full on fluid at least it provides you with piece of mind that it has been verified.

Just picked up my truck from the dealer (dick poe toyota in El Paso TX). It was 1.5 quarts low. They are aware of the issue and I had no problems at all getting them to check it.

I'm scheduled to have my transmission fluid check next week. Just bought the truck two weeks ago. Unfortunately, I've experienced some symptoms that people have expressed. Seems like this is a serious issue that Toyota hasn't addressed as of yet.

At my local Toyota dealership now (Lithia Toyota) Redding, Ca. Service manager stated they have serviced a few trucks already that were very low. They know it's a problem, but are waiting on an official word from Toyota to act etc... Still waiting to see the results of my truck.

Update: It was 1/2 quart low.

I'm new to the forum, and a first time taco owner and experienced the transmission issues many of you have noted. Because of this forum, I gained the info I needed to arm myself to go to the dealer to get this rectified. I also took the advice and started the case with corporate before going back to the dealer. My dealer surprisingly didn't treat me like a dumb woman driver and listened to my complaints, and after spending 6 hours there, they ended up adding 2 quarts of tranny fluid!! I do have the tow package, and the truck was built in Texas. I also had them check the differentials, u- joints and lube them as well, making sure to tell them that I had crawled under the truck and saw that the zerks were still coated in factory paint. Far as I can tell, everything I asked for was done. I crawled back under it to check :). They were accommodating and even assigned their master tech to do the job, who was familiar with how to correctly check the tranny fluid, and the service tech explained a little of what had to be done to do it physically.
So thanks to all of you for the info of what to check for, possibly saving me from future headache down the road! Also, the pictures of zerks and their locations really helped me know what to check and be taken seriously by my dealer!

Just got a new 2016. Felt the hesitation shifting from reverse to drive on cold start. Dealer did the full check and about 1 quart low. No problems with the dealer here in Casper Wy. Seems better now but tomorrow morning will tell for sure.

Ditto. Time will tell if it's been done right. Cautious optimism here.

Update: Problem not fully solved. Truck sat all night, about 2:30 pm started it up, and hesitated for several seconds before engaging from reverse to drive. Have an appointment to go back Monday afternoon and followed up with corporate. Corporate will call the dealership after this return service, then contact me.
So, back to square one. Gonna keep bugging them till it's right!

Had to leave it at the dealership overnight so they can "try to replicate the problem" then the service guy tries to tell me it's normal. Some other jack leg tries to tell me his does this everyday and is normal. Such b.s. My first new car and Toyota truck.....got a really bad taste in my mouth. I waited many years and saved for several years to be able to get this truck. I may never buy another Toyota again if this isn't corrected. Getting really pissed off, less than 800 miles.

The first fluid top off found the truck shifting better, but still hesitating when moving from R to D when the engine is cold. I wish I bought a 20 year old beater truck without all this stupid electronic computer control stuff. I don't need fancy tech, just a solid off road 4x4 to get thru bad weather and have fun in. 35k for a pretty p.o.s. - thanks Toyota.

if you nag corporate, they will make things right.. it might take them a few days. last week i got my official paperwork for my extended warranty. platinum 100k mile.

    upload_2016-5-31_9-18-42.jpg

to be clear, that 5/17 is the date i talked to them and accepted their warranty, not the date i purchased the truck.... so 5/17/16 + 7 years

Truck has been in 3 times. I opened a case with Toyota in the beginning. Tech has filled the transmission twice. Delay from R to D is still there. Truck feels like transmission is slipping while cruising down the highway. Took it on vacation over the weekend to put some good miles on it. Transmission felt like it was slipping entire time. Service writers don't seem to want to work with me. Guess they aren't getting paid to? Called another dealership and going in tomorrow morning to talk with them. They seems a bit more understanding.

I have corporate in it from the beginning, so that is a hope that they will make it right. They have been courteous and professional, so I hope that extends to making things right.

Love my taco and want it to get well, just worried it won't make it to its second birthday!!

Did this this weekend on my truck (2012 with 50k miles). I was about 3/4 quart low.

    Thanks for the update .
Toyota dealerships continue to sell their Tacoma,s without checking the trans fluid .
I have received a bunch of pm,s confirming that even the 2014 / 2015 models are low on fluid

For you guys that are still feeling a delay from reverse to drive after the fluid level has been "properly" topped off , keep in mind that the reverse to drive application is controlled by the computer . Toyota is aware of this issue and will be re-writing the code to eliminate this delay or at least minimize it .
Please post your build dates so I can update the first post .
It doesnt look like Toyota has dealt with the low fluid issue at the factory and are relying on dealerships to take care of it during a pdi .
