What's wrong with the OEM pads/rotors?

+1 on the OEM. Most aftermarket will be made in china.

I'd also like some suggestions OP. On my first gen I went with Brembo drilled and slotted, which were noticeably better than OEM. Unfortunately Brembo doesn't seem to make rotors for gen 2.

I'll assume you don't plan to offroad the truck? If you do, drilled/slotted rotors aren't the best idea as they can clog with mud a fair bit and perform worse than smooth rotors in that situation... I've read about people making the Tundra brembo kit fit, but I think you'd be looking at bigger wheels to fit the oversize rotor and caliper...

I used EBC yellows on the front, the pads wore down in 35k-ish miles. Just swapped to stop tech slotted rotors and new pads about 1k miles ago, I really like them so far.

I put power stop drilled and slotted rotors and metallic pads on my 2001 Tacoma for extra stopping power when pulling my boat. Pads lasted a long time and the increase in stopping power was way better than the stock OEM equipment. I bought them as a kit from rock auto. I think they were $150 plus shipping. They will also be going on my 2006 Tacoma too. Night and Day difference.

You realize any colored rotors will be shaved clean after the first stop right? Besides, having coated rotors is a terrible idea. The entire point of a brake system is how much friction can be applied by the brake pads to the rotors. Having a coating on there will reduce the friction and reduce your ability to stop. This is the same reason you should use brake cleaner on fresh rotors to clean the packaging oil they use to keep them from rusting.

I installed some Brembo blanks on my brother's 08 with some ceramic pads from autozone. They worked pretty well. I think we ordered the blanks from an online store.

All the pad/rotor combos have the same braking "power" in that they can lock up the wheel and cause ABS to activate.

For better "initial bite", I run StopTech slotted rotors and Akebono Performance pads, bought from Rock Auto. I avoided Brembo rotors because unlike the high-end sports car rotors, the Brembo OE-replacement rotors have no corrosion protection on the hat, so they rust heavily after one winter.

For towing though, it's more important to make sure the trailer has good brakes and your transmission fluid is in good condition (so you can downshift and use engine braking going down long descents).

I recently bought a toy hauler and I am contemplating swapping to the Tundra 13WL calipers, pads, and rotors. You may want to look into that.

Those are the same 4 piston calipers as your second gen Tacoma ? That is only an upgrade for first gen Taco's or older gen T4R's ?

Just picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Looking at any alternative right now to haul it with the Taco but may have to migrate to something bigger...

Thanks Evenflow! I show the 13WG for my truck. I thought the 13WL were bigger.

I completely understand the OP's request for better brakes. One "E stop" on a mountain road (motorhome drivers suck) and you'll get it............ The rotors are way too skinny to maintain a stable shape in a high heat situation. Warp bad just when you need them to work well - I was surprised how bad they really are.
