So I recently bought a '16 Tacoma Utility Package. Honestly, I love the truck, but I feel a bit jipped. I rushed into buying the truck because my previous car died out of nowhere so I was in need of something and knew I I would love a Tacoma. I did a bad job of preparing myself and studying the different trims before I went in and I ended up with a pushy, uninformative prick of a salesman. When he pointed me to the truck and said it was a Utility Package I asked what that meant and all he said was "Removes the back seats and saves you about 1700 bucks". That sounded nice enough. I test drove the truck and loved driving it. I ended up getting 1500 knocked off the price as well so that was nice.
Jump to driving the car around on a daily basis and reading around here I realize I'm missing out on the keyless entry (easy enough to fix), Cruise control (also not too hard to fix on my own), sliding back window (which is a pain since I have a dog), and all of the black plastic cosmetic replacements (which don't bother me too much but a lot of people don't like them and it makes me worry about resale). After looking I've found an SR Convenience package with satin black rims (I've intended on painting the rims black) thats only about 3k more sticker price of what I got. Its basically the EXACT truck I would have gone for if I had informed myself more.
Do you guys think I'm crazy for worrying about this stuff? Do you think trading in at this point would be completely fucking stupid? I've had the truck for just over a month and have only put about 700 miles on it. Thoughts?

Edit: I've spent a decent amount of time on the Tacoma reddit and I've noticed a handful of mentions that Tacoma World is very negative. I feel like they're wrong. I'm getting a lot of positive vibes and good input from you guys. thanks :)

You'll burn a few thousand on a loss, but if you don't like it, you don't like it.

Spending thousands on a brand new car should buy happiness. Get yours!

How much is the trade depreciation? If you trade in for close to cost, consider this a life lesson and get the truck you REALLY wanted.

    Edit: love the screen name.

Just list it for private sale and see what happens. I've never seen one. A small business looking for a truck to wrap might snap it right up.

Not totally sure yet. I've contacted a the dealer that has the truck and I'm gonna meet with them on Saturday to see what can be worked out. What you've said is exactly what I'm hoping for.

    Graasssssssss tastes bad.

I had the luxury of being able to (barely) wait 11 months for my dream truck (from debut to delivery). I hope that you're able to get the configuration you really want/need.

Oh, and "get off the high road Summer. We all got pink eye because you wouldn't stop texting on the toilet."

Do what makes you happy. Better to own a truck you love than one that you will always question.

Flashback....In 2001 I purchased a new tacoma regular cab 4cyl. Young and needing reliable transportation I bought what I could afford and loved that truck during the time I owned it. Always had some regrets after the purchase, nothing wrong with the 4cyl but wanted and needed a 6 for my lifestyle. The regular cab was too tight, Im 6'4" and wished for a larger cab daily. Point is if you regret it this early, and can afford it go ahead suck it up and cut your losses. Get what you really want.....whats a couple k in the scheme of it all. Back then if I could have afforded it I sure would have. Have lots of memories in my first tacoma which led to the one I have now, which is what I wanted back then except.........Im still missing several thousand in accessories.:notsure:

I took a beating on my '14 because I wanted things the '16 has that just were not available when I bought it. I tried selling the '14 but that turned into a major pain and ended with all the folks who tried to low ball me telling how much they were willing to give once it was to late. So to me selling something that new, for as much as you would want to get is probably not worth it in the end. You will find that not that many people can finance that amount on their own, and those that have the money will just buy new. I'm way more then happy with my TRD Sport and the money part is just a fading memory and slowly being replaced.

Sell it. Get what you want.

I had bought a brand new Land Cruiser (it was steal due to ugly color). Kept it 27 days, 550 miles. Traded it in on another one. Lesson learned.

So what do you actually want that your truck does not have? The sliding window? Cruise is $25 in parts, intermittent wipers are $90, keyless is cheap, alloys maybe $500 still way less than $1700. You could get an aftermarket bumper with the remaining cash and end up way ahead. The rest of the black trim no one notices. I am sure you could retrofit a slider from a wreck if that is a big deal.

It boils down to two numbers, price on the trade and price on the new one. If they offer you a decent value on trade and a fair purchase price, go for it if that's what you want. Figure out how much you are willing to lose on the deal and try to keep the numbers in that range. It may not be the most financially sound decision, but it's your choice.

Yeah I've priced out all of these things. The most expensive seems to be the sliding window which is the hardest thing for me to own because the dog gets kind of stressed out without air. Thanks for laying these prices out for me though. definitely sobering just to look at them again

    OP,
I did something similar 2 years ago I traded my truck in on a 4 runner it was not long after I realized how much I missed a pickup, last Saturday while away for the long weekend I wandered onto a Toyota lot looking at tacomas, really wanted a regular cab 4x4 but no longer produced bought a SR5 double cab
4x2 (2.7L)it has a lot less bells and whistles then my 4Runner did, but I really love driving this truck
It took two years of being unhappy with the 4Runner. If you can afford the hit? Go for it. If not this forum should help you get it to where you want it to be.
