Good advice. I've been thinking on both 4.56s and 4.88s...you made up my mind bro.
I'm curious what the shops charge for the labor without lockers. I've priced it put thru ecgs and it was reasonable. I'm sure locally it would be more but still curious.

    37's will fix your issue.

You Tacoma guys with your unnecessarily large tires and expensive gears....

    :boink:

    I like Dakota's argument of how there'll likely never be a situation where a 37 will get you through/over something a 35 wouldn't.

Well, I've yet to be in a situation where a 35 would get me through something a 33 wouldn't.

First it'll be 35s, then it'll be gears, then long travel, then bead locks, then 37s, next thing you know you're wanting to trailer your truck to trails more than 100 miles away, then you're buying a diesel, when does it end?!!>!

:crapstorm: (I love this emoticon. So happy I realized it existed the other day)

I used to wheel with the guy from gitout when he was driving his Isuzu Pup, and it's lifted height was probably not much better than a stock Taco. I'm convinced it's all about being a skinny twig of a vehicle.

I wouldn't mind a regear for the 285s, but I don't feel like researching, paying, finding a trustworthy shop, paying again, is something I want to tackle.

It's okay manuals have problems of their own too :luvya:

I got the built diffs through ecgs and had mule install them. Regearing isn't really needed with 33's as it is with 35's.

Trust me I've thought about it... It's just too much cutting even with LT, and wears out uniballs like no other. If I do a 37 it'll be cooper STT Pro's.. 315/75/16 measure 33.5" on the truck, so a 37x12.5x17 is probably around 35.5" on the truck?

Eh not doing bead locks but everything else in that list is true haha already have a diesel though to tow it. See comment above for 37's...

You don't know how bad you have it until you regear. Made a huge difference for me.

I'd like to test drive your truck. Maybe I should do 4.56? We'll probably both end up on 35 MTR's huh? What did @TacoSTIG go with?

I've had this thought as well. I've been so close to just ordering a front locker for stock gears.

It's so torquey but sure next time we meet up! If you are definitely going 35's next then do 4.88, if you stay with 33's go 4.56. Tacostig has 4.56 with 35's which will feel like a stock Tacoma power wise.
I might do Cooper STT pro's next but we'll see.

Remember you couldn't get up that obstacle at funny rocks last year! 35's would have helped for sure. But no don't get a front locker until you regear at the same time, PITA to pull the front diff as @TacoSTIG knows.. He's a pro now.

4.56 and a front locker are on my list to do somewhat in the nearish future. I'm not going bigger than 285s though. Do that and it'll be time to move on to a new project

My M/T ATZ's measure 37 1/8" on my truck and I'm running 4.86 rear/4.88 front gears and it's slightly over geared from stock. Next tires will be 38's if I haven't sas'd by then and I feel the gearing will fine. Honestly, if you much highway driving 4.56 with 35's would be fine, but my experience is also with a manual trans. I shift when I want.

It would cool if we had a little database or thread where guys could test drive others trucks before deciding on such an expense. I'd be glad to offer mine and if you wanted a comparison with 4.88 and 35's, just bring the tires.

I agree a test drive would be nice. But from what I've gathered in research for 35's and gears.. (2nd gen, 1st gens go one step lower)

I would like this info also BUT I have yet to determine the correct ratio theoretically installed by Prior Owner.
The "ad" stated 4.56 F/R with an ARB front.

I try the Neutral, one tire on ground, tape on driveshaft, tape on raised tire, spin tire 10 times and count revolutions of driveshaft = not 41 times or not 45 times but somewhere in middle (daFuq?!?); perhaps a 2nd set of eyes to un "F" this simple task..

Wait 10 times? You spin the tire one full revolution while holding a sharpie on the driveshaft, count the spirals on the driveshaft.
