I voted "other" as I love the truck.. I just wish they could have delivered it full of tranny fluid... grease in the U joints... Oil n the differentials... Torqued the U bolts... etc, etc....

But If they won't do it ...... I will....... F them... Love the truck as a result. All it takes is some real "hands-on" from the guy who owns the truck..!!

No problems with the truck in 5k miles, works as I expected, does what I need it to do.

My transmission felt jumpy for first 2k miles or so. Now it shifts very smoothly. No humming, wind noise, leaks, or anything else I've read about. Traded up from an '11 DC pre runner and couldn't be happier.

This kinda puts things in perspective. So far, an overwhelming number of people are satisfied with or love their truck. You see so many complaints on here but if you pay attention it's the same 3-4 people bitching about the truck in damn near every fucking thread.

interesting you say that, because no one makes a true puddle jumper truck now, Ranger, S10, etc... All have gone to these midsize, which are just as large as 12-15 yr old, full size trucks.
Seems a manufacturer who introduced a new one would have that market all to themselves.

Get your tranny fluid level checked...OR "do it your self". Then U will have a good truck... also.. do the U joints and U bolts ... check the diffs.....

You are good to go now my man..!!

    I voted other.

This is my first new car/truck, I'm in my 20's. I wanted a mid sized truck that will last me many, many years. Based on that and the fact that I wanted 4wd/manual transmission I was left with tacoma or frontier. New model tacoma, an abundance of reliabilty reports of toyota and the tacoma, great reviews on the new manual transmission, great 4wd reviews, essentially my only option there was the tacoma. So I almost had no other choice.

I'll put it this way. It is a great truck in many ways, ESPECIALLY off road. The manual transmission is really really nice. But damn, there are a few problems on this vehicle that should definitely not be on a new vehicle, especially one with this sort of reputation. And the more I look into it, the more it seems that Toyota kind of avoids some annoying (vibration) issues and just deems them "normal." Problems that my 14 year old ford truck didn't have.

Then there are minor issues that are occurring on too many vehicles. Things that worry me in the sense that I'm surprised they passed the entire design and quality process. If those small issues passed what does that say for the rest of the truck?

I'll keep the truck until it falls apart around me. Only time will tell if Toyota reliability is a thing of the past and it only makes 100k miles or if the issues are just minor annoyances and it goes 200k, 300k, 400k etc.

Toyota did a really good job of designing a vehicle to fit my needs/desires on paper. If other brands had the same packages available (fresher design, 4x4, manual transmission) I can't say it would have been such a clear choice for me.

At the end of the day, I am keeping my truck even with the problems it has.

I cast my vote as the "overall like it." I love it with the only exception being that the transmission does like to shift around. Sometimes I feel like it up shifts too soon and other times takes too long to up shift while being very willing to downshift at the slightest press of the gas pedal. I wish that on the highway it would let you mash the gas a little more without down shifting.

Also the "manual" mode is worthless. All it does is limits the highest gear it will go in to. I wish it would hold whatever gear you stuck it in.

I would venture a guess that toyota will be releasing a TSB for the tranny shifting but overall it isn't THAT bad, atleast not as bad as TW makes it out to sound.

Overall I'm really happy with the truck, I drove a 2012 manual for four years and consider this truck an upgrade.

Smitty you were one of the guys that swayed me to literally change my order and wait 2 extra months to get a manual. Truck arrives mid July for me, I really thank you for helping me choose a trans I'll be happy with! That combined with growing up on manual tranny's my whole life made me make the switch. You can be my wingman anytime.

Overall I am happy. My last Toyota was a 1986 4 Runner. I love everything about it except driving on the freeway. I don't mind the gear changes between 5-6 but it seems too eager to drop to 4th and then doesn't want to shift back when I get to the top of a hill. I only noticed it on a trip the other day and that was my first 100+ mile trip. Around town I have no issues with the engine and transmission. If they had a MT in when I needed a new car I would have got one.

Dents in roof from poorly loaded canoe. Broken side mirror from blown transfer truck tire. Scuffed up front bumper from thinking I was still in a corolla. Graham cracker embedded upholstery from a crazy kid.
I have no complaints with my truck. I didn't mind checking the u joints, u-bolts, and ATF. In fact I used it as an excuse to buy some new tools. I haven't had any notable problems with it. The gas mileage has been great for me (using ethanol free gas, more testing to come) The AT is wonky at first, but it has gotten better. I have not towed anything with it yet. I've even learned to love the extra large snout once some derp was properly applied to the grill.

Thanks man! It's actually supposed to arrive at the dealer tomorrow! But the dealer is 900 miles away. So, I might be doing a cannonball run this weekend.. I'll find out tomorrow.

I don't doubt that you and some others are having issues. I hope Toyota makes it right with you. It's just a vocal minority on here that really makes it seem like this truck is a piece of shit, but it seems like just a small minority are having major issues. I've got my fingers crossed that I don't get a TRD Vibrator with shitty transmission! But I've been driving a 4-cyl Nissan Altima for 11 years, so it's going to be hard for the Tacoma to not be a major improvement!

It is interesting lots of Tacoma guys move to Tundra, and lot of Tundra guys come back to Tacoma.

Having never owned a Tundra, and taking delivery of a 4x4 TRD soon, I am curious for those that have owned Tacoma and Tundra, how does the quality of each truck stack up the other?

With the rebates and aggressive pricing on Tundras, there isn't much of a price difference often. Is there a quality difference, and resale difference?

Voted a few minor problems but otherwise I'm 100% pleased with my V6 4x4 AC. (AT trans fluid level and taco lean) FWIW, I've finally figured out how to drive this 6-spd transmission and I'm seeing 23-24mpg on 20 mile round trips to the store. My average mpg per tank is slowly creeping towards 20mpg and I don't do any freeway driving. It tows my 4000lb boat just fine and always gets my bike to the dirt. Winning!!! :D:D:D

So less than half of those reporting are without issue and love their truck. Everyone else just "doesn't regret buying it" or hates it?

I came from an '09 5.7L CrewMax TRD Rock Warrior Tundra myself. 100,000 trouble free miles of enjoyment. Pulled up to 9,000 lbs with it a few times with a brake controller and heavy duty trailer that is and it had no problems with it. Great in the snow, ridiculously quick off the line with great throttle response and very well built. Never had any complaints about the transmission shifting or hunting and the engine felt strong thought the whole range. But it had significantly more power and got pretty meager milage (14.5 MPG combined for me).

I would have gone for another Tundra in a heartbeat except it would be hardly any different from my '09 other than some bodywork and interior differences. Plus I have since moved houses and it didn't fit in the garage. I also don't tow anymore and when I do it's under 5K for the most part. I'm a single guy, so no kids or anything and the CrewMax just wasn't needed. DCSB Tacoma was very appealing and I was willing to give the 3rd gen a try. So that's how I got here.

As far as quality goes, the new interior in the Tacoma is better than my '09 as far as tech and features go. But I didn't have any issue with the Tundra rattling or otherwise even after 100K on the clock. If I could do it again, I might have just kept the Tundra and not changed a thing but I wanted a fresh vehicle to start me off that was mine from the beginning and fit more places and was just more practical for my uses. If you do lots of trailering or have a family and need the space I'd absolutely go with the Tundra. If you're single, have a small family, smaller house, or value efficiency, then the Tacoma is a great fit. Also better off-road due to it's size. That's my opinion anyway. Both are good quality and it's a Toyota Truck so resale is pretty good.

Right. The rest of us are happy, but have had some small issues. The first response would be no issues. Mine howls in a crosswind and changes gears like nobody business (getting trans checked Monday). So I'm in the second category along with many others apparently. I wish I could say I've had zero issues, but that's not entirely the case.
