Dealership says they don't carry differential fluid, had to provide own

Dealer needs to get blasted at corporate level... that's ridiculous and utter incompetence.

I sent myself a detailed email on the day the debacle , thus have a dated documentation of what transpired, including the receipt for the diff oil. Not sure that will matter. Lol

 

Definitely should have left and called toyota, but like I said I was tired and wanted it done, so I endured. The most amusing part of this is when the guy came out and said the diff oil was 40$ a quart, a collective chuckle rippled through the waiting area. a fellow customer immediately held up his phone to myself and the manager with a Web search showing high end diff oils around 10 to 12$

 

Wow a dealer not having diff oil? I could see it if you needed a special additive and they were out of stock but that seems odd to me. Then again I changed my diff oil at 1000 miles and I usually change it once a year. I do wheel so that is part of the reason and I do cross deep water sometimes. I haven't crossed deep water yet because I haven't had time to put in the breather mod.

 

My tacoma has the fake LSD that actuates the brakes on the wheel spinning. I got diff oil with LSD additives, from my research in BITOG even if it doesn't call for it it's fine.

 

Look at the receipt in original thread. The 1.5 qts is for the front differential. The receipt displayed does not contain info about the rear differential.

So did they change the gear oil in the rear differential?

 

Yes they changed the front rear and transfer case as noted by the witness paint marks broken verified by my observation

 

Believe me, the first thing I did after they returned my truck to me the second time that day ( the first time was to go purchase the oils) was to get under the truck and check the paint marks, lol

 

Neither does mine I was just saying if it did require something special like an additive then I could see them saying they don't have it but it doesn't matter with ours.

 

Agreed lol . They did offer to order it for 40$ a quart, 240$ for 1.5 gal of oil seemed a little absurd. Clearly they did indeed have the oil, and that they had it in 55gal quantities. Especially as the truck doesn't call for lsd additives. The owneds manual calls for the diffs to be x'ed at 60k I can't imagine that when persons come in for their 60k service that they have to order the oil and that it costs 240$ to do so.

I've had 60k/ diff x services in the past and I would have noticed, and protested, a 240$ charge for oil !

 

It's good that you did that, but given the comedy capers of this whole scenario(multiple stories by the dealer), I would get under it on a level surface and remove each fill plug. In most cases, a diff is filled 'til a small amount runs out the fill hole to show it's full. If that doesn't happen, insert finger and feel for fluid level. Should be close to the top of drain hole. These clowns may have simply pulled the plugs to check the fill level. Quite frankly, I would not be surprised to learn they did nothing more than that.

If some fluid does drain out when you pull the fill plug, it should look brand new.

 

The bottom plugs witness marks were broken so the oil would have spurted out, thus i think they changed it, but I agree completely. Will check when i can ...Nothing would surprise me at this point. Believe it or not the truck is back at the same dealership and I driving a loaner wile the deal with a skewed/uneven bed , but that's a story for a whole new thread.....

 

I made the mistake of taking my truck to the dealership once. They ended up charging me twice what they quoted me, for less work than was actually in the original quote. When I asked why the bill was twice what I was quoted, the guy in service had no words he just looked at the ground like a child trying to poorly hide the fact that he was lying. I sent an email to mother Toyota fully documenting my complaint, not sure that it will do any good, but someone needs to be held accountable for this type of bullshit.

 

Anybody reading this have the 60k service with the differentail oil change in their pile of reciepts? I am interested in what they charged you for the differential fluid...it can't be 240$ lol

 

Edit : it the diff x might be at 30k interval service I don't have my manual in front of me at the moment, surely someone here has their pile of reciepts handy? I know I've had diffs changed in the past on my previous tacomas, and there's no way I would have let a 240$ charge for oil slip past me, lol

I do all three myself (front, rear and transfer case), uses roughly 6 quarts total of 75/90 synthetic for around $14/quart. Takes about 90 minutes to do it all...can be a messy job but worth the savings and it's comforting knowing it's getting done correctly. There are some awesome tutorials on here.
