Quest for the proper lift...

Hey all, I'm a lift virgin and I wanted some expert opinions here:


THE TACO: 2005 TRD Sport 4x4, 6sp Man, Black, Stock Suspension


THE TIRES: Goodyear DuraTrac 265/70/17 (TRD Sport Rims)


THE QUEST: I want to lift my truck as high as it'll go and still look good with my current tire size. (aka: before it makes my 265/70/17s look too small.) I don't want to go any larger on the tires because I don't want new rims, wheel spacers, UCAs, yada yada yada...


THE CANIDATES: I was thinking of going with 5100s all around and a ToyTec AAL in the rear. I'll be attempting to install all of this myself.


THE QUESTIONS:

1. Will this make my current tires look too small?

2. ToyTec offers a 1-1/2" AAL and a 2" AAL (correct?) Will the 2" be too high (visually) for the tires?

3. What setting should I set the front 5100s at to keep a somewhat stock nose angle? I wouldn't mind being a little closer to level, but I do not want to go fully level.

4. Will the answer to questions #3 make my tires look too small?

5. Anyone got pics of this (or a similar) setup?

I say you get some Bilstein 5100 Shocks...there adjustable up to 2.5". It'd give your truck a lil bit of a lifted stance and your tires will look just fine. Check out downsouthmotorsports.com

 

Yeah, 5100's will be your best bet with stock everything.

The rear 5100s are not adjustable. But you're saying that an AAL may be too high? I was hoping to go up a little in both front and rear.

Nope, it sure isn't. You're gonna need the 1 1/2" add a leaf to match the 5100's set at 2.5" or set at 1.75" to have a little higher rear end.

 

Ok, I think I'm gettin' it...

So if I went with the 2" AAL and adjust the front 5100s to 2.5", I'd end up with a slighly higher (stock-esque) ass-end?

Will the 265/70/17s look good with this setup?

With just about ANY amount of lift, your 32" tire is gonna look small....

 

Even with a 1.75" set up, the tires do look small. When the time comes, a bit bigger tires are the way to go. You might run across the driveline vibe or you might not with the 2" AAL. It's a hit and miss. I just did the front with the 5100's to even out the truck but I do have the TSB springs in the rear. With that set up, the truck is even front and rear. I'm happy with the way it is.

 

Hmm, I'm trying to avoid bigger tires because I do not want to get new wheels.

Perhaps I should quit bitching and just go with 285s, 5100's set to 2.5" up front, and 2" AAL in the rear. But now we're talking spacers and new UCAs... that gonna run me another $1000.

I'm torn.

What are your fronts set at??? TSB rear springs all that you have for rear? And it sits level? That's what I'm looking for...

 

Just go with the 5100's at 2.5" up front at the 2" rear AAL. Dont worry about tires and stuff now. It will still look pretty good. I've seen Tacomas with that setup and its not bad at all. I mean bigger tires do look better, but not by that much.

 

Yeah, maybe I should start there, and if I really feel the need for bigger tires, I can save some green and do the wheels/UCAs too.

Yeah thats the way I look at it. If you feel you need bigger tires, just save up like you said and get them down the road!! At least for now you have a lifted Tacoma!!!!

 

I'm set at 1.75" and it sits level although it does vary from truck to truck with the rear TSB at how high the rear sit after awhile. It actually look stock without the bigger tires.

 

I have the TSB in the rear and the 5100's at 1.75 in the front and it sits perfect to me. I plan on getting the max of 265/75/16 in a A/T or a M/T tire to make them look more substancial in the wheel well.
