Wow...what size is that...it's a real nice TT, the Taco squats in the back...Have you thought about installing the Firestone Airbags...I have them on my Taco and OMG what a difference in the handling and ride quality. We have thought about taking the trip to Myrtle Beach, we have family there

Nice setup. I sold my 2004 silver AC just like yours when I bought my new truck. I loooked at the wolf pup but convinced myself at some point that I needed fiberglass. I have now spiraled into analysis paralysis.

From reading forums on here with researching for myself, I even checked with my Toyota Dealership in Apex, N.C. where my truck was purchased & also Asheboro, N.C. here in the Carolinas then weighed my purchase out from top to bottom I am definitely at my limit is what 2 Dealerships told me BUT I'M NOT OVER TOWING as long as I stay under 1,500#'s cargo capacity I scaled out ready to roll at 10,760#'s definitely do the math don't hesitate to contact a Certified Toyota Dealership in making your decision based on your want's & needs I'll be adding Firestone air bags but for now it pulls great without Any problems!IMG_20160526_131321830.jpg

Lets say I but the toy hauler starting with dry hitch of 420# could I just put the battery and the propane tank either in rear of trailer or way up front of my pick up bed while towing to reduce my hitch weight another 66 pounds of hitch weight? Then with 420# dry hitch weight and 80# for WD hardware my starting hitch weight would be 500 with 150 cushion before loading gear? Does that make sense?

Not sure but what ever you decide as with any decisions, questions scale it out with me I had access to a Certified Scale House & every time I made changes in cargo I scaled to see were I was on the weight

Hey Gang - Just purchased my first Tacoma! 2012 TRD Sport - with Tow Package.

Me and the Mrs. are planning to drive around the country from July - September (at least) It's my first truck and first time towing. I am a good driver, always have a good sense of the vehicle Im driving. I've also driven a Bluebird 30' across the country once.

We like the 4000 gvwr travel trailers, but are potentially open to campers.

    I'm wondering the following:

-Is 4000 GVWR too much for a first timer?
-If i go with that GVWR what additional add ons are must haves, and optional.
-Will towing the above stated for 8000 miles in a 4 month period put excess wear on the car?
-What is considered too much towing in general. (if that even makes sense)

Thanks in advance, will post some pics soon!

    -SM

4000 GVWR is fine but the one main thing to make sure of with the tacoma is your payload rating and hitch weight rating. My payload on my access cab prerunner is only 1,169 Payload... hitch weight plus whats in the cab and back of your truck

If you can keep it at 3,500 total trailer weight...that's even better

Example my toy hauler 600# hitch weight loaded
my wife me and the dog weigh 420# combined
100# pounds of gear in back of truck bed
That's 1,120# leaving 49# pounds left over for whats in cab of your truck

so just check what your ratings are on your 2012

My ratings are max tow 6,500
    max hitch weight 650
    max payload 1,169
GCVWR 11,150 truck and trailer together
I have sport pkg with factory tow class 4 hitch

A-liner Ranger 15. Sleeps 4, 1700lbs, and slides right in the garage. No complaints here, I have it set up and ready to camp in under 5minutes.

You'll want to do something with the brakes. Tundra brakes up front will get it stopped.
