So I have a brand new set of sliders bare metal. I got one of them painted today. Problem is the outside edge and a couple of other spots have a texture to them instead of being smooth like the rest of the sliders.

    This was my process:

    1. Cleaned with Acetone
    2. Took a wire wheel to any surface rust and anything else that needed to be cleaned off.
    3. Cleaned again with Acetone
    4. Primed 3 coats with Rustoleum Self-etching primer. I followed directions
    5. Painted with 4 coats of Rustoleum Professional Flat Black paint.

    Two questions:

    1. What did I do wrong to cause this?
    2. How do I fix it?

I am thinking of just sanding down the spots with the texture and respraying them. Not sure at what point to do that. Didn't know if I needed to do it within a certain time period or after a certain time period.

    Pic of slider below.

    Any help is appreciated guys!

I also had this issue on my skid plates in a couple spots. My guess is that it's the way the primer adhered to the metal or somehow I just messed up with how I sprayed it in those spots. On skids I could really give a shit, but if it's in a spot that can be seen on the sliders you might wanna sand it down.

Looks like orange peel, which is too much paint too fast and/or too close.
Or it could be grease/oil on the metal that didn't come off. Maybe.
I would say the first more than the second.

Wait for it to dry, sand it down, start from the primer if you sand down that far.

    @ERMB What do you think?

I have had similar outcomes with rattle can flat black. I am no professional painter by any means, but I think it has to do with preparation of the surface.

Instead of sanding, have you thought about using the bedliner spray can? It gives a textured look and I have had good luck with it

If you're using your sliders for something other than protecting you from shopping carts you're going to have to repaint after every trip. Just don't worry about it.

I was debating between the bedliner and the regular paint but alot of guys have reported that the bedliner is harder to fix when you bang it up.

After reading the Dr's reply I think it is his first option. The primer was smooth with no texture when I started the top coat. I think the angle I was holding the can and I may have got to close. I'll try sanding it down tomorrow and see if the texture goes away sometime between the top and primer then repaint those spots.

Side note: the only spots where this texture is located is on the surfaces that were facing up where the can had to be tilted to spray the surface.

I understand what your saying just don't want to look like a blind man painted them the first time I put them on.

Understandable. From the further details provided, it's sounds like the paint application technique was the issue. Sand as little as possible just to smooth it out and then carefully repaint those spots. If you can, orient them in a way that you don't have to tilt the can to spray that spot. If you're careful you should be able to get it to blend well enough.
