I bought a 2015 Super white Taco last year. It is my fourth Toyota Truck. It has 6000 miles on it. i paid $25,800 for it. It is a Prerunner SR5 model.

I was looking at a 2016 metallic silver TRD Sport and the dealer offered me $25,800 trade in for my truck and the brand new truck for $30,200. Seems like a killer deal. $4400 difference.

I have had Toyota Trucks for about 15 years and the 2016 seems very very slow to accelerate compared to every other one I have had. I drove it today in the city and highway and it is a whole different truck. I could mash the gas to the floor and let off quickly and the RPM gauge did not budge.

I watched a couple of guys drag racing all three generations and the 2016 always finished last. The second generation was the obvious winner of that. Not knocking the truck because I really like every other aspect of it. the dealer told me this is a common complaint and you eventually "learn to drive it".

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbmOYTMirrw

My question is, should I trade? I have a super white and it is less than a year old and the paint is drying out. I have waxed it and the dealer has waxed it twice. That is why I am looking to get a new one based on the history of the super white paint problems that people are having. The dealer and service department also told me that the super white and the desert tan are the only colors that they do not clear coat and it is obvious when you compare it to the metallic paints.

Do I trade my peppy 2015 with crap paint for the sluggish sexy 2016 TRD Sport that is great on gas?

BTW, My truck is paid for so I would be picking up a new bill.

That same amount of cash could almost pay for the 4.0 supercharger, which makes the truck so much more fun to drive. Just sayin. ;)

What ah ya, ignorant? Seriously, when people make a decision to sell/trade their truck it is usually based on one, or more, of four factors. The first, and most common factor, is emotion. These people will ride by a dealership one day and notice a truck that catches their eye. From that day forward they can't get it out out of their mind and don't think they will ever be happy again until they trade vehicles. The second factor is peer pressure. These people have a close friend that recently bought a new vehicle and now they want one too. It is possible they are jealous of their friend. The third factor is based on a genuine need for a different vehicle. Perhaps their current vehicle is worn out. Maybe they have decided to start a family and simply need more room. The fourth factor is, often times, related to the first factor, emotion. A clever salesperson will simply give the potential customer a reason to be dissatisfied with their current vehicle and then keep elaborating on the "reason" until it is blown entirely out of proportion in the buyer's mind. This reason can be something the salesperson just pulled out of thin air. John, only you know the true reason you want/need a new truck. Whatever your reason is doesn't matter. You should buy a new truck and enjoy driving it. Good luck, my friend.

I guess the biggest question is do you need 4x4? Or are you wanting the tech/sport packages for the interior amenities? What is it about your 2015 that makes you consider trading in for a 2016?

Edit: Is it solely the paint issue?

(My bad, didn't read all the way to the bottom of your post)

OK. Hmmm.... Scratching my head on that response addicus, but I am really more concerned about having to repaint my truck in 5 years. Most of the data I got about the paint came from tacomaworld.com. The new truck is nice, but I only have 6000 miles on my current truck so the new car smell is still in there. I guess I was not expecting them to offer me as much for my 2015 as they did. Kinda like I was driving for the past 8 months for free and the new one is a TRD with the cool hood scoop. So I am really thinking about it. My quote is good for 7 days on any car in the lot if they sell the truck before I decide. I don't need a 4x4 so the TRD off road is not really an option even though I have cool off road wheels on my current 4x2 SR5.

Not too familiar with the super white paint issue. Is that something that could be covered under warranty somehow if it is a manufacturer defect so to speak?

I bought the paint protection, but it is only good for 5 years. I saw a 2011 Sienna SE super white with 90k that was as chalky as a 20 year old ford. My paint is looking a little dry. Especially if I let it get a little dirty. Google the superwhite tacoma paint. Maybe i am worried about nothing but I love my trucks and want them to look nice.

John, one week is not a lot of time. It's possible that another buyer could see your silver Tacoma and buy it out from under you. Now is the time to be decisive about the white paint on your current truck. It's appearance will only deteriorate over time. If you really want it, and I think you do, buy it.

Well, considering what they offered you, you can't really go wrong with that trade-in value. I too like my vehicles looking well kept and if it means that my truck is going to look like crap in 5 years despite my impeccable care, I'd be more than disappointed to say the least.

Perhaps it would be a decent move if you are already detecting paint issues after only a year. If you wait and the paint continues to deteriorate, your resale/trade-in is only going to go down.

I actually hadn't thought of that. They may even have a silver TRD Pro. Pretty truck BCOutdoorsman. I like that color. You waited a long time to buy it. I agree with you. Life is too short to wait. None of us are promised tomorrow.

But the paint is deteriorating and it's only going to get worse. He should trade it in on a new TRD Pro.

He should at least talk to the dealer about a TRD Pro. It wouldn't hurt anything, and he may get a killer deal on it.
