    That makes sense.

But is anyone out there worried that a valet attendant is gonna run off with the master key, make a copy then come track you down later and steal your truck?
It's not like it's quarter million dollar sports car, lol.:D

    Hardcore,

I was in the exact same position as you last week when I picked up my new truck. SalesDude handed me the two black ones with the Remotes and then handed me the gray one and said "this is the valet one". Being so excited to get in my new ride, I just said "OK, thanks". Like you, I assumed that this key couldn't unlock the glove lock, or the center console if equipped with a lock.

Well, a few days after I get the truck realize I have nothing to lock on the inside and find myself asking "What is the valet key for?

Snipe answered it best as its a key without coding??

    THANKS

    You were not alone.

The Gray Valet key does have a chip in it but you can't use it to program other keys with it.

The way I understand it the black master keys are needed if you want to train your truck to accept another replacement key

My Valet key is black and only opens the door and accesses the Passenger airbag on off. It can't start the vehicle.

I figured it's purpose was that because it was chipped it could stay within range of the vehicle so it can activate the anti theft for when you get a remote starter. But if someone breaks in and finds the key, they can't drive off with the vehicle.

Guys, not trying to derail the thread, but how many keys should come with a new 09? I just picked up an 09 dbl cab and was only given two alarm buttons, 1 black key and 1 gray key. Am I missing a second black key?

    Thanks,
    Rob

I think the valet key can also be used for the airbag ON/OFF switch

Correct ! That's what I got. Three keys - 2 black keys (with the transmitters) - 1 gray key (that is the valet key). The gray key will do everything that the black keys will do (nothing else to lock), so far as unlocking the doors, starting the truck, etc. I use it as a spare key, and keep it locked inside of a "Master Lock" combination lock box, which is locked to my truck. Should I lose my keys while I'm away from the vehicle, the gray key will get me in and get me home.

However, that's the point - when I'm out doing whatever, I prefer not to carry my keys, for fear of losing them. So, I normally throw my regular keys into the storage bin or the center console, and lock up the truck and go. When I return, my extra key is always there, ready to let me back in with the spin of 4 dials. Simple, and you can change the combination at the drop of a hat.

    Great Investment
You'll never lose your keys, or get locked out of your vehicle.
(like the Real Estate people use on door knobs).

I have a 2008 and got 2 master keys (black) and 1 valet key (grey). My valet key will only unlock the doors, maybe it also works the airbag, have never tried that. The valet key will not start my truck. The engine will keep cranking with the valet key but will never start.

Mine (2007 - the gray key) will crank the truck. I'm just wondering what good a "Valet Key" is, if the "Valet" can't start the vehicle. Makes no sense.....eh ?

Wish I would have had the valet key last Wednesday when I locked the keys in my truck. AAA bailed me out. I need to carry the valet key or at least hide it somewhere on the truck. That is about the fourth time I have done that. I guess I'm the type that needs a hit on the head and a kick in the ass to learn my leason.

I'm guessing you have a base model or whichever model that had no immobilizer. On immobilizer equipped Tacomas you can't just use a "valet" key to start the trunk. Engine will crank and then just shutoff when the computer doesn't get the chipped key info.

I have the immoblizer, just need the valet key to open the doors so I can get to my keys that start the truck. You are correct about the valet key, just cranks won't start.

Just wanted to give a heads up on these. I live in Hawaii and a lot of surfers use this lockbox. I did to until my truck got stolen. Thieves here target this lockbox for easy access. Thieves remove the box and take it in the bushes to smash it open. Once they have the key they walk right up to your car like it's theirs and they are gone!!! This caused me a bunch of headaches. In the truck I had my cellphone, wallet (id's, credit cards, cash, etc), house keys (had to rekey my house cause they had my address on my reg), Oakley's and my snoop dogg cd. Just my two cents.
