Is pennzoil sychromesh ok for our manual transmission

I went to every store around no one had redline. So I put 75w90 valvoline in the rear dif and pennzoil synchromesh in the transmission is this ok or no. I have a 2000 2.4 rwd manual taco with 110k

 

Anyone have experience with the stuff I don't want to drive the truck and break something

 

I would think the "syncromesh" oil would be fine. I use Valvoline "just because..."

The Toyota spec for manual transmission oil is GL4 or GL5, SAE 75/90. I haven't seen GL3 oil for 25 years.

 

Yea the guy at Autozone said to use it instead of valvoline 75w90 that I bought for the differential. Just don't want to fuck the truck up by putting the wrong fluid in.

 

you are fine. hell, i think in my last truck i just ran 90w for over 100k with no issues lol

What is the viscosity of the synchromesh? GM and Honda synchromesh fluid is 5w30. Toyota uses 75w90.

 

NO!!!!!!!!! Ironically....Synchromesh will eat your synchros. Even the 2wd trans. It's for trans that use a light gear oil.

At first I thought you were full of BS, so I googled the stuff. According to what I read, there may be a problem with the synchromesh oil from Pennzoil when used under certain conditions. Because I roam around the hot hot Nevada and Utah deserts in the summer, I'll stick to what I've been running for the last 25 years (and it ain't synchromesh).

In my old 2wd I noticed the shifting to deteriorate within a couple of weeks after the change.
Google people who HAVE used it and rec'd it.....it's really better as a replacement for boxes like old t-5's......I think?
They used ATF from factory but that turned out to not be a great gear oil.

 

It should be fine but if you want peace of mind you might just have to swap it for Redline.



I just changed my fluid to Redline MT-90 and the truck shifts better than ever at 209,xxx miles

 

X3 on redline mt90. Best fluid for these trucks.

 

I wouldn't put that crap in my transmission. but then again, I don't like penzoil . So long as the synchromesh is GL5 rated, it will be fine regardless of what else it says.

Yeah, I never take fluid recommendations from an auto parts store employee. They think they know what they are talking about, but most do not.

Straight from the owners manual:

"Oil type:

Gear Oil API GL-4 or GL-5

Recommended oil viscosity:

SAE 75W- 90"

I would dump the transmission and put a good GL-4 gear oil in it. MT90 is the best. The rumor going around is our transmission don't like the GL-5 as much as the GL-4.

 

so if i told you to put gl5 rated oil that wasy 75-90, youd ignore what both me and the manual said?

75w-90 GL-4. It fits exactly what the owner's manual calls for and it has a lot of positive press in the Toyota communities.

 

That's odd, ATF is used in a lot of manual trannys. I've never had an issue with it in the 5 speed of my '97 Ford Powerstroke pushing 200k. The synchros are starting to go, but that's normal with that kinda mileage in the ZF5's.
