Yes, please practice before doing it. You will find it welds much different if you have never done it. And I wouldn't weld both sides, unless you just want to. I'd only do the outside and fully weld it, but that warping shit is real and will fuck you quick. On your practice runs, practice going at a pace you think is pushing the limit on warping it so you can get a good grasp of what it takes. You have a lot of surface area to jump between so use it to your full advantage and you should be fine.

good thing I have plenty of each right now haha. . .

im not looking forward to the time though, i know its going to be a marathon once I start.

And thanks for the advice @allmotorrex. I plan on spending tomorrow practicing and if it goes smoother than expected, start a door in the afternoon, but worst case use all day tomorrow to practice and start the doors wednesday.

the guy that got me started welding down here mentioned he had a guy that does all his powdercoating in town for free so I was gonna see if he could get a quote for me, hopefully cheaper than me goin to some random guy off the street.

I plan on welding on the tube and let gravity/me drag the puddle onto the sheet, and not actually do the same type of "e" on both tube and sheet. Hopefully that will keep me from burning through the sheet. Almost like a 2:1 count ratio (without ever really touching arc to sheet)

I've been getting this "clunk" in my front end for about the last week or so. It was driving me nuts. I had the truck on jack stands twice checking everything I could think of, but I couldn't find anything wrong. I was about to take it to a mechanic, but I thought I'd give it one more look over and ... Bam! I found it. Apparently I had bent the stupid OEM "skid plate/splash guard" thingy up into front LCA bolt last week out playing around. It was catching a releasing as the truck flexed causing the clunk. For once, a simple fix. :bananadance: I need a real skid.

Practice 1. im pretty much set on just doing it after this first take. the 2:1 ratio seems to work great, not eating through the 16g AND its not warping nearly as much as I thought.

    Prac 1.jpg

I ran that long center bead to get the metal to warp, and it took about a 3.5" section continuous to get it to warp just slightly.
The two on the left are the size im mainly gonna run...all over the doors. more like stitch welding, but connecting them in the end.

and for penetration, shouldnt be an issue.

    Prac 2.jpg

you can see again, that long run in the middle right side was bout to eat through, but none of my smaller 1.5"ish lines did any damage.

Found out something interesting last night about my truck. I always wondered why I never experienced the Taco lean that seems to plague these trucks. As it turns out, the 6112s on the Pro have two spring cup mounting locations, kind of like the 5100s have four. It comes from the factory with the driver's side in the higher position to prevent the lean. Evidently it's this way on the 4Runner and Tundra Pros as well.

the only pieces that warped a little were the 'front' pieces, which makes sense, since they are only welded on 2ish sides. I didnt think about that until after I saw it and wondered why it warped but not the other two panels. lesson learned through experience, ill take it (earned it haha). other than that, its going as planned.
