Funny, but then the second gens look like they were inspired by the Fly Brothers in A Bug's Life.

The "problems" with the 3rd gen are greatly over-represented on this forum.

A $4400 difference to get into the vastly improved third gen? What's there to even think about? Go sign the paperwork.

Trade it in for the manual 16. Much more "peppy" than the truck you're driving. Best shifting mt truck I've ever driven. 12k miles, hasn't shown a single issue posted on this forum

    No.

The 16 is a horrible driving truck, has a snout issue, as well as several mechanical issues that need to be worked out.

    2nd Gen all the way!!!!!!!

Most not having an issue is subjective as someone else pointed out, there is a percentage on TW and FB that have issues there's a new thread about every day on some small or not so small nuance, multiply that by those that aren't on TW and FB and the percentage grows. Issues range from the transmission under filled, crankshaft position sensor failures, vibs at certain speeds/rpms, to diffs leaking, etc. Yes there are more that don't have issues than do, but to simply state only a few is not accurate. It's a new model, bugs are there and buying one is always a gamble as with any new vehicle. Its a good platform, they just need to work on some QA issues (underfilled tranny and leaking diffs, etc.) and some fixes for a few other little things, Toyota is slow to address issues as they were even with the 2nd gens.

Vastly improved, that's subjective. Bahahaha. Lots carried over and two totally different powertrains. If you value interior, tech gizmos and a 2-4 mpg improvement then the 3rd gen is the way to go. If you want a more simple platform that is proven without the frills then the 2nd gen is for you.

Lol! The hate is strong in this thread ... but if you will notice from their profiles, all of the hate seems to be coming from people who don't even own a 3rd gen truck. I'm not sure if this is envy or just previous gen fanboy-ism, but it sure is fun to read. If you pay attention to the people that actually have one, most seem to think the 3rd gens are pretty good trucks.

My experience ... is it a perfect truck? No. I've had some small issues with mine, and just like any other car I could have bought, there will probably be a few more issues to deal with in the coming years, but it is still a great truck. The decision is up to you, but the deal sounds pretty good to me.

The 3rd gen is a vast improvement in just about every way other than acceleration.

If you want a much better interior, much more modern exterior (I won't call it better as looks are always subjective), better mileage, more tech, etc. Then I would say the 3rd gen is the choice.

If you want a simpler, but seemingly faster or seemingly more powerful truck, then maybe stick with the 2nd gen.

I have 3 friends with 3rd gens 2 are co workers, have driven a few, 2 both have issues one with his transmission and diff the other vibes. Not hate, just saying there ARE problems and to just negate it to a select few is an understatement/not entirely truthful especially to someone looking to commit $35k to a new truck, sure the majority are problem free, but there are some that aren't. Not hate, I have owned 1st and 2nd gens and want to remain a taco owner and will likely end up in a 3rd gen too, its a great truck if they address some of the issues owners are having.

My 2nd gen "hunts" for gears too... hit an incline, torque converter unlocks, then shifts to 4th... go to pass, same routine... Try and maintain speed on a hill it goes from 4th to 5th back and forth... it's an auto, they'll all do it to a degree.

You do realize the 3rd gen carries over the ALOT of the same bones of the 2nd gen (frame even though they say its a new material, suspension components, cab, etc.) so not sure how that's a VAST improvement as you elude. Looks as you say are subjective from the side profile the trucks are almost identical to the average person design wise (same cab) but yes the 2nd gen is simpler in design and thus older looking, but everyone has their own taste. The powertrain is different and may suit some better as you get a few more mpg than the outgoing platform and its a midsize truck so not really meant to tow, etc. The 6spd may not suit everyone as its goal is to improve mpg and wont feel the same as the old 5 spd, but keep in mind the 5spd mated to the 2nd gen was built/designed for a V8 and is extremely durable. The interior design and tech wise the 3rd gen is VASTLY improved no question. The verdict is still out on the powertrain but the engine has lexus bones which has proven durability, the 2nd gens are proven engines pushing 200k+ no issues if you can avoid the frame rot. 2 different trucks honestly.

This is the first I have heard of the white paint issue. I know it's a single stage paint, but it should be fine. What kind of wax are you using?

Since I like spending other people's money on the Internet :

Yes you should trade your 2nd gen on a 2016

Then in the fall, you should trade your 2016 on a 2017 TRD PRO

My 1998 Tacoma was white and never a issue with the paint. I just polish my truck a lot more than others. My truck had 173000 miles till it got recalled for the frame. My new truck is white. You need to polish your white truck more often.

From what I've seen in the 3rd gen section, all the bullshit that goes on in here is a two way street.

    Source of bullshit:

A.) You've got 2nd gen guys who haven't been within 10 feet of a 3rd gen who absolutely hate on the truck.

B.) 3rd gen guys who have been within 10 feet of a 2nd gen Tacoma doing the exact same.

    Two extremes exist here.

    Just my observation.

The canned "hive-mind" mentality responses from either side are easy to pick out.
