Should roll through the next Barstow trip, I know I'd happily let you take a swing with a few of mine!

What kind of shotgun? You can pick up Pardner or a Mossberg 500 clone like mine for a hair over $200 out the door I think and it'll be brand new?

If you want a cheapo rifle that makes a shit load of noise and hurts pick up a decent quality ("very-good"+ is usually best, but verify the front post is straight) Mosin Nagant. If you'd like something the kids can pick up easily I recommend either a Ruger 10/22 (not my favorite) or a Marlin 60 (awesome fucking rifle.)

Any of these could be had for $200-ish depending on market and how patient you are waiting for a sale to come up. I'd also start with no scope, way better to pick up shooting from irons before you start putting any kind of glass on it.

Also: a bit more expensive but an awesome "cowboy gun" is the Henry lever .22, gotta get that old school feel going! Shooting a nice 30-30 or those .357/.44 mag lever guns is straight awesome, right @Dangerousd1987

I personally would prefer a good .22 for range time over a shotgun. The uses are different and more... relevant? Shooting a .22 at 100m is near equivalent to any intermediate cartridge out to 3-400m and larger rounds like .308 or 30-06 out to like 600m. Those light little slugs* can be a real challenge with their light weight and low velocity!

If your neighbor knows a guy who collects he'll most likely guide you well.

Yeah unless you get a long shotgun and are into trap/sport clays, etc. But even then you gotta get a thrower or teach someone how to use the hand throwers... I typically recommend a first .22 to get comfy with. Just watch out for ammo, every time I go to Walmart they have plenty of everything else but the old boxes of 525 rounds are scarce.

    Rowher!
I can hear the bickering already

A locking gun cabinet isn't that bad, use a combo lock so there's no keys to get misplaced and you should be good. It won't be DOJ compliant so you can't bypass the need for those stupid fucking cable locks, but, it's safe(r) against a kid's hands, y'know?

I have a 14 gun safe and she's about full :goingcrazy:

Only other security beyond that becomes exposure and training. My cousin is a hair older than your boy @madsand but she was exposed very young and has great respect for firearms.

Also, what can be done to make it further safe is to put trigger locks on AND remove the bolt/mag/clip or whatever can be removed to render the firearm useless to the point of just being an "steel bat"! I always remove the bolt assembly from my AR's AND a lock through the ejection port through the mag well. For the MN and 308 I also remove the bolts. A little extreme you can say, but when pieces are spread out and locked in different areas (i.e. even a small tackle box like locker) it will make it virtually impossible unless someone REALLY wants to take the time to find all the pieces, LOL!!! Other than that, again, the firearm is just as dangerous as your ex chasing you with a baseball bat!!!

That's the best way to go about it. I learned how to shoot at a young age, never ever played with them knowing what they do. besides I could ask my dad and he'd take me shooting :D

Very good advice. I prefer to not have to assemble my firearms in the event of surprises

But even then I've taken "safe" measures there as well, haha.

    How old is he anyhow?

Every single time. Removed the allure and imprint the real impact and there's nothing else you can do.
