Gears are 100% personal preference and depends on what your needs are. 4.88s with 315s worked great cause the truck isnt screaming or searching for gears while on the highway and it still has a get up and go for stop and go traffic since this is my daily and still and have about a 40 mile commute Mon-Fri with 80% of the commute being highway.

Although, I may not be the best to go off of cause I have a crawl box and 4.7 transfer case so low gearing isnt really a problem when offroad. Top speed when both the crawl box and tcase are in low is MAYBE 5mph. But itll crawl out of anything.

Lol, it stuck and I noticed right away and turned the key from crank to off fast about ten times and the plunger broke loose.

My opinion may be biased due to boost lol. It felt good before the sc too. Seen way to many 5.29 failures.

Difference is probably in the overall suspension differences I guess you could say. Stock wrangler JK's come with Dana 30's and some kind of shock that I don't know but I looked at a stock Rubicon and they come with Dana 44's and bilsteins and I'm sure different duty coils. That's the only thing I find cool about rubicons though...high pinion Dana 44 in front with Dana 44 in the rear and front and rear lockers. That's it.

Thanks to all of you guys for chiming in; it definitely helps.

I should have added that I'm running the manual tranny, but you guys gave me a great sampling of recommendations anyway. Originally, I was going to go with the 315 KM2s, but I just found out that BFG is discontinuing them, so I'm going with the 305s. I'm perfectly ok with over gearing a bit, so it sounds like 4.88 is the way to go. It isn't my DD, so I'll gladly take a few more RPMs on the highway to get better performance around town and off road.

    Thanks for your input, man.

Interestingly enough, I'm getting a 4.7 crawl box in a few weeks. Between that and the gearing, I should be pretty well set up. I've always been of the mind that I take an obstacle as slowly as possible, so the crawl box was a no-brainer. I've just seen too many buddies explode their shit when they tried to gas pedal their way through stuff.

Yeah cant be having a heavy foot when both are low. Mainly just idle and a little gas here and there. With both in low on the street, I dont have the brake power to stop the truck lol. It just keeps rolling. In the dirt, I can kind of stop but just pop it into neutral when I get over the obstacle. Guess it just means its time to spend more money and upgrade the brakes lol. Not sure how much Ill use both in low but being able to choose between 2.28 and 4.7 will be nice.

Nah my tcase is a 4.7 and crawl box is the stock 2.28. Ordered it through lowranger but its made and shipped from trail gear. Mines a 23 spline input and output so shouldnt have any problems. Came fully assembled except for the shifters. Was the cheapest/best option when I was looking for a tcase since I couldnt find any used 79-95 toyota pickup tcases for a decent price. Marlin makes one as well but has been on backorder forever. A note about it though is its a passenger drop and tacomas are driver. My front axle is passneger drop so that was the reason for this tcase. And im pretty sure someone sells a kit to make the tcase 4.7. let me look.

    Tcases I got.
    http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/toyo...l-creeper-2-28-x-4-7-dual-transfer-cases.html

And heres the 4.7 conversion from Marlin. Not sure if itll work on the tacomas. I used inchworm prerunner adapter which called for a pre tacoma transfer case. And this conversion is made for the 79-95 pickups and 4runners.
    http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/toyo...r-case-gear-kit-21-spline-tdt-4-7comp-21.html

and some info on the conversion
    https://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/transfercase/exploring-new-4701-xd-technology

Hope that helps some. Let me know if you got more questions about it.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to having the option of either the stock 2.56:1, crawl box 4.7:1, or 12:1 compound low. Not sure how much I'll use the compound low range either, but having the option will be nice. Frankly, I'll likely be spending most of my time in 4.7.
