You are doing better than me. My dealer ship for the third time has written up my diff whine as a only a sound caused by my oversized mud terrain tires. They recommended going back to approved Toyota stock size tires. Really? They are only 265/75R16. It not like i am running 40 inch swampers. The service manager went for a ride with me so I could point out this sound I was hearing. He proceeded to tell me it was caused by the tires and that he never understood why we insisted on aggressive tread tires. He the tells me he takes his Dodge Charger on worse roads than I take my Tacoma? o_O WTF. When looking over my service ticket they blamed every item I had them look at on my tires (diff whine, Vibes at 2000 rpms, and the rumble strip while slowing) Go get fuked Elko Motor Company.

Oh, and they did not even put washer fluid in my empty washer tank. Guess tomorrow I'm going to have to check the oil and all other fluids because who knows if they actually performed the 10k service. Fuck me.

Toyota Care(s).... maybe depends on your dealer. You pretty much summed up my 5K service experience... now looking at a different dealer service department. Started with ordering parts to see how that goes. So far so good... ordered a liter of diff fluid and a liter of manual trans fluid... no wonder they are shipping trucks low on fluid. That shit is expensive .. $26/liter for each!! Also ordered the front rail track with end caps.. that went well too and likely will be getting my 10K service at a different dealership than where I purchased my truck. Shame really since my 1st dealer is like 2 miles from our home.

Tell me they put on a set of approved wheels and tires to confirm it was your wheels/tires.

If not, demand that they do. BTW I drove about a dozen tacomas on my dealers lot and they all had the diff whine at 55-60 mph. Just feather the throttle at 55-60 and you'll get it to whine (the service manager showed me that trick). Some are worse than others, but they all do it to some degree.

I also have stock tires and experience vibes at 2100-2400 rpms when driving. The rumble strip while driving also occurs with my stock tires and is a known issue.
Go to a different dealer or call these clowns on their BS. Make them prove their diagnosis by switching out with standard tires.

I fortunately don't have the vibration at higher speeds, just the rumble strip feel. To be honest, it's not that bad just annoying really and agree it shouldn't do it.

So I have been having the exact same whine coming from the back of the truck for a bit now, took it to the local dealer about a week ago and expressed my concerns. They took it on a drive and agreed that something was wrong. They checked the Trans, Drive line, Tire Pressure, and all the fluids and concluded that it was diff related. The told me to hold tight for a week as the Regional Field Engineer was supposed to be in town soon, and they wanted him to look at it.

Fast forward to yesterday. Got a call form the dealer saying the Field Engineer would be in tomorrow (6/7), so I drive on over to drop off my Taco, and get the rental that they have for me since they didn't have any loaners on hand. Put me in a 2015 F150 Super Crew, which was way better than the Malibu or Carolla I assumed it would be! Gotta count the small victories!

Now for today. Get the call at about 3pm that they have ordered a new rear differential for me, and I can pick up my Taco for now. They explained, when I was there, that the basically ran through all know issues like low Trans fluid, u-joints (guess they do actually know about this stuff :p), etc. Everything checked out, and the Field Engineer said time to order a new rear diff. He also said that mine was only the 3rd Taco in the Indianapolis to Chicago area with under 3k miles to be getting a new rear diff....

So I am back in my truck for 6-10 business days while I wait for my new rear diff to show up. Also gave corporate a call to express my concerns, and asked for the 7 year, 100k mile warranty. Got a case number, and supposedly will here back about that Friday. Overall I am completely satisfied with the help I have been given! Haven't had to argue with anyone, and I am well on the way to getting this resolved! Now hopefully I can get that extended warranty!

After reading everything on TW I was terrified they were just gonna say "Meh, it is normal." When I initially brought it in. I was actually getting ready to argue when my service advisor came out....then he was like "Yeah we hear something, and it definitely isn't right." I don't think I have ever been more relieved

They replaced mine and nothing really changed. Has anyone had the whine completely go away?

Maybe I should take it back. I'm getting used to it now, but if it's not normal than its definitely doing damage.

Mine did go away. It was extremely loud because it didn't have any fluid in it....well maybe a cup or so.

Mine is less, but it still whines 55-60mph. I can get it to happen if I feather the throttle.

Can you try it on yours with a quiet cabin and let me know if you hear it? I'm genuinely curious.

This might somehow be related, so I'll post it anyway. Just changed my rear diff fluid, and as suspected I was low. About half a quart low, maybe even more. Replaced with redline 75w85 synthetic. I can already feel the truck shifts smoother. I have the off-road so my diff takes 4 qts. Which it took exactly that before fluid started to trickle out. WTF Toyota

Thanks man. I think everyone should check their levels in diffs. Just like the trans fluid Toyota dropped the ball on topping off other crucial fluid levels

    6/13/16 Update:

I'm finally getting my bumper light replaced. Also, they confirmed my trans is low and that it is out of alignment. I've been here 3.5 hours and they said it will be done by 4. I'll post what happens next.

My whining from the rear diff has quietened down since it was new. I have 15,000 on it and just took it for the tire rotation. I mentioned perhaps checking the tranny fluid. The service manager said, "The only thing you need to do to your truck is drive it ! and if the transmission was low, a light would come on the dash".
