I have the harbor freight basic low profile jack. Works perfectly fine. I have jack stands but dont use them all that often. I prefer my 4x6 wood blocks instead. Same can be done to provide extra lift....put a wood block between the jack point and the jack.

As for where I jack from....in the rear its off the axle. In the front it depends....if im working on one side ill jack off the frame on the side im working. If working both sides Ill jack off the pelfrey skid plate at the cross member.

Go low profile. Especially if you plan on lifting it eventually.

I just bought this one for doing my front brakes on my taco, worked fine, not sure what an AL version gets you over an all-steel version. The release valve to lower the lift is the lift handle too. Pump to raise, CCW twist to release the lift.

One of the few HF tools that don't suck, or breaks after its first use. $85 + tax = good buy!

Also. +1 on the jack stands. I ALWAYS secure the truck with them and use a wheel chock.

I used it on the center cross member, lifting the whole front end up at once.

I have two floor jacks with one I really should retire. That Northern Tool looks like a good option to me it has decent lift range- nice and low to get under my 66' Mustang too. Dont suppose there is decent priced one under $300 made in the USA?

floor jack isn't worth a shit in the mud. Stand out of the way of the handle on the hi lift and you are mine. Takes up nearly zero space on my bedside

our shop uses a 3 ton aluminium jack from HF. we pick up ambulances all day long with it. its our go to jack for the service truck (roadside repair) as well.

i just purchased a AC delco 3.5 ton steel for shop use, only because of the transmission adapter kit came with it. when not using it on transmissions, it serves as a regular floor jack. otherwise we would have purchased a second HF 3 ton.

That's nothing compared to what I do on a daily basis. Not sure how many times I've overloaded my racks by 2000-6000lbs+

I have a 2.5 ton low profile jack to fit under the GTO. I've used it on other cars too with no problem.

For additional lift, I throw a chunk of 4x4 in before jacking up the vehicles with a higher ride height.
