Bed Security

I have always had camper shells, which seem to be pretty easy to break into from the rear door. But I have never had a tonneau type cover. I like the roll and lock style, and other options simular to this, but which is more secure? The shells offer more covered cargo area, for about the same price as a typical roll and lock style. Anyone had both? feedback greatly appreciated.

 

I have had both, the soft tonnoeu cover that rolls up, that had no lock or security so anyone could get into the back if they wanted too. Now I have a Bestop Supertop on it and same deal, the side windows just zip up so no security there either. Thats why I dont leave stuff in it overnight if I am out on a trip or out of town.

 

I have a Access Roll Up cover- It clips down in the back and with a Pop and Lock tailgate adapter- I feel pretty confident that it's safe from all but the most determined folks.

 

I like the roll and lock option, seems more secure then just a shell, but for the same price?

 

Does anyone have a opinion on which cover is the most secure, fiberglass tonneau, roll n lock, or?

 

As far as true physical security....The fiberglass and the roll up type are both hard so they are probably pretty close to on another.
As long as you have something on the truck tho you'll discourage the majority of punk ass bitches trying to steal your stuff.

 

Yes, I guess the old saying if they want it, they will get it applys here as well. I just need a secure area for my stuff, and have always had a shell, but do not really need one. My problem is the hard covers are just as much as a shell, and it seems to be a better value to buy the shell vs a hard top cover. But I like the look of the truck without the shell...

 

I've had soft covers with locking tailgate handles for as long as I've owned trucks (10 years) and I've never had anything go missing for my beds nor have I had anyone stab holes into the cover.
Not saying it doesn't happen- but making your truck more work then the one three spots down does alot.

 

you could always get a tool chest that goes under the tonneau to keep valuables safe. then use a soft roll up with the pop and lock to stop most petty theives

I like the folding hard covers. They give pretty good security and you can fold them up when you need the bed space. You'll need a pop-n-lock tailgate lock as well. I have a Bakflip G2. There's another one, though the name escapes me. I like the Bakflip as it sits flush and it exposes most of the bed when opened.

 

I use an undercover, not what' your looking for but I can take it off the truck in about 20 seconds flat (really needs 2 people at least for due to the awkward size, not weight). Goes on the same time. Security isn't perfect... but it's enough to make people think twice about if it's worth it.

 

Seems to be a good value for a hard tonneau... I have looked at these.

 

your cover has a look of a hard cover when fully closed if I am thinking of the same cover...it looks good

 

Ehhh...Mine looks like a soft cover pretty much.. Velcros down on the sides and clips down on the end.

The bakflip one looks like a hard cover.

 

Same here. There are a couple of decent tool chests out there that I'm looking at. Or, I may just go with a military surplus box.

 

I've always liked soft tonneau covers. They keep items out of sight, add some weather protection, can be had for a good price, roll up when not needed (except in cold days), and can be easily installed/removed by yourself.

I live in a fairly safe area, but I'd never leave something exposed around here, or it'll be gone.

In an era of people breaking windows to get GPS devices, etc, I don't think a cab cap will do much more than a soft roll up cover. Plus it seems most modern roll up covers have a lock mechanism on them now, so as long as the tailgate is locked, so is the tonneau. And with the tension on them, they're tough to open from the side.

Depending on your neighborhood, I'd look into a soft tonneau cover and a locking tailgate. I'd feel safe leaving many things in the back (I wouldn't leave a TV or something back there overnight), and it'll do it's job: Keeping honest men honest.

 

I have the pace edwards full metal jackrabbit and I love the security. That said because our beds are not very deep it really reduces my cargo capacity. There are days when I wish I had the shell and there are days I am glad I have the ability to have the open bed.

 

Gizzygone, I agree. The bottom line is, don't leave anything valuable in your vehicle. That's the only sure way to prevent anything from being stolen. Of course, you still have your average neighborhood vandal and car thieves to worry about so the optimal solution would be to garage it if possible.

 

I had a soft cover, one night a knife to it and my stuff was gone. Now I have an ARE LSII lockable cover and I haven't had a problem, yet. I live in a pretty safe area now. Knock on wood.

 

I have the snugtop hard cover. It does a few things,
1. Protects the tailgate from getting stolen.
2. Stops people from seeing what is in the back.
3. Protects equipment stored in the back, for the most part.
4. Stops my son from loading up 10 friends after school.
5. Looks nice.
