For reasonably priced stuff I would suggest dropping in new spark plugs, some good oil, and a fresh air filter. This will restore some currently lost power and allow your motor to run at is optimum performance in its current state of health. On top of that, the "deck plate mod" (search it up here, there are a lot of posts) is a good one too.

Other options that pair well with the deck plate mod is a full exhaust system. But that is $$$ if you're willing to drop for only a few extra horsepower.

You'll hate me for this one...tires. Not sure what you're rolling on now, but heavy mud even heavy all-terrain tires really suck the power out of trucks as small as ours. Much lighters street tires will make the truck feel a lot more peppier. Another option for some added "pep" is going with lower gears in your differential, but your RPM's will be up higher during highway speeds.

Full exhaust system is a good idea and aside from forced induction, is probably the best way to gain a few extra horses. But high flow headers/exhaust work best when paired with a blower or turbo...more air going out means you should be putting more air in, which = maximum performance gains

On a 3.4 I'm all for recommending the TRD supercharger:
    a) for sure the highest reason- CARB legal-- such a smaller headache
    b) easy install
    c) low end power
    d) not known to be un-reliable

But on a strait 4 on the Taco, I'd be all over turbo- I don't think there is a CARB option, and it needs the extra pep a turbo has, and there are kits out there to choose from.

If it is they are not listing that, and they should, its a big marketing advantage especially at that price point just to gain ~30hp. If not CARB, for that $$ or a little more, make much more power with a turbo.
