Are they progressive? If not it really doesn't matter which way they go. Lowered cars typically have a progressive rate spring hence the directional bias.

Quick way to tell if they are progressive is to see if they have any tighter gaps between coils on end opposed to the other. ​

 

Just checked my King springs (700 x 14) mounted on Fox 2.5's. Top and bottom are exactly the same. I wouldn't do shit, but I'm lazy. Letters will be covered by your tires and dirt in no time...

 

I don't know much about suspension, but would it matter if it was progressive and the coil diameter was the same top and bottom? Seems like the spring would just compress first at the lower rated section of the spring, regardless of the orientation.

 

progressive springs have closer spaced coils at the end(s), when these coils touch each other, there's less spring left so they are stiffer for the remaining compression travel.

 

10-4. Seems like it would just compress earlier at the point of least resistance, regardless of the vertical orientation. If you hit a small bump, and the coils with more spacing (higher spring rate) were at the bottom, the shaft would move at the bottom and the spring would compress at the top first [tighter spaced coils- lower spring rate (as long as they aren't touching, which would increase the rate, I think)]
Again, I don't know shit about suspension and need one of you mofos to clear this up @jberry813

Edit: clarified after reading John's explanation. Probably made it more confusing...and I'm probably wrong.

 

if the coils aren't touching, they all compress equally.

picture a coil spring unwound, so its just a straight spring wire, one end is anchored, and you're deflecting the other end, so the whole wire is springing, it takes so many pounds per inch to move, just like a scale... now shorten that spring wire in half, but keep it the same diameter, it takes twice as many pounds per inch of travel.

when the close spaced coils touch, it shortens the remaining 'free' wire in the coil, so the spring becomes proportionally stiffer as measured in pounds force per inch travel.

 

In a nut shell! And typically the tighter spaced coils are found at the top or frame side mount.
I said typically. Not always. Sometimes there's even dual rate progressive springs both top and bottom have tighter spacing. But for the sake of keeping it Tacoma based I'll save that info.
