thanks for the tip on the filters. Didn't think to change the oil grade. Just went with the manual recommendation

Yeah no biggie, next time around id recommend grabbing 0w-30. People will say its too thin for high ambient temps. In fact 0w oil at 100*F ambients is STILL thicker than 30w at operating temps. But the 0w is MUCH thinner than even 5w at 75-100* which allows it to lube better during the time the motor / oil is heating up to operating temps.

I thought that the 0w or 5w referred to the start up temps where the 30 referred to the operating temps?

I still think there is way too much thought about what oils to use though. 30 years ago it might have mattered but now not so much

OEM and M1 :) but I think the biggest factor is that you do the change regularly.

You are correct, 0w or 5w before the -30 refers to the thickness of the oil at 75*F (i think its that temp). But even 0w at 75*f is MUCH thicker than the 30 at operating temps. But 0w is Much thinner than 5w at 75*.

    Very true.

OP: I prefer Mobil 1, as many others have stated. I have one more free change through the dealership, then I will switch. As the quote above says, any oil works, but when a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 is barely more than regular dino oil, I figure I might as well use it. The only other brand I have used before was Castrol Edge, which I liked but it doesn't come cheap.

For filters, I always go purolator pure1. They are a great filter, and much cheaper than the big name brand ones.

I use AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-30 at 60,000 after using 5W-30 for past 59,999 miles, better start up and smoother and better MPGs, Also used Mobil 1 and Penzoil Ultra also, all three are excellent and use 5W-30 or 0W-30 for better lubrication, and a OEM,K&N,or Mobil 1 Filters, WIX Top Tier and a few others are great as is NAPA GOLD too ! Stay with 100% Full Top Tier Synthetics !Don't be afraid to use additives in oil from time to time as I do as TufOil,Lubegard Bio Tech,Lucas Synthetic Stabilizer,Motul,STP ,Greased Lightning,PTFE additives! Long Life if you love your trucks or cars!

They cheaper than 4.50 per filter? Big ole thread on here somewhere showing the differences in filter media / filter construction. FYI the OEM D3 filters have some of the best construction and the most filtering media and can be had for 4.50 a pop.

I haven't bought one in a while, since my changes are free right now, but they used to be about $6 per filter, and about $4.50-$5.00 when bought in bulk. At least that was for the GTO. Much cheaper than big name brand filters like the Mobil1, Royal Purple, etc. Those did worse in the last filter tests I saw (haven't looked into those tests in 5+ years though). The nice thing about the pure1 is that the whole thing is coated in griptape, so I never needed a wrench to remove it.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I use Valvoline synthetic for my engine, transfer case, and differentials.
