Squeaky Dakars : Any advice from others with the Dakars ?

Just thinking about the squeak. Think I will do Oz's pond liner mod first.

 

Ah okay. Yea hardened spring steel would be best with carbide, but cobalt should be able to due it also I would think

 

May go with the pond liner first. Would actually like it to be a once and done deal though.
I think Rob had his leafs drilled out. @mach1man001 ??

Think I will start simple first. Would just hate to have to rip the pack off if I wanted to drill it though.

what I was thinking.

 

Drilling the leafs was pretty simple, I did mine with a cordless drill, and an extra set of hands to apply the oil to the bit and hold the leaf steady. I like the idea of having a spring shop do it like ? mentioned. I spent close to $30 on the 2 bits it took, though 1 would of worked if my buddy didn't burn it up. I don't know if the pads are any better then the other fixes, but it isn't any harder to do. If your leafs aren't installed yet I say drill them, like you said, you don't want to pull them back out later

I just caught up on this thread. Mine made noise like a m****f**** for first six months. I cleaned them and sprayed with every type of lube known to man. Since then I have not had any problems. I have not had any noise from them in over 3 years

 

Yes, actually had them punched out at a spring shop

 

I'm ordering Delrin channel liners (have lip) from www.eatondetroitspring.com, my Dakars are in the mail to me. Gonna prefurbish... According to the folks at Eaton DS, they've seen the springs wear out long before the liners, Delrin is the shizzle. They vary from 0.03 to 0.06 in thickness, I figure probably 0.04 for the 2 1/2's (if that's the right size). I will be removing the long overload for 1/2" less lift & additional space. I plan on running them the entire length of the springs, but without the springs here to measure I don't know for sure:
1. What is the width of the Dakar springs?
2. How many feet to do 4 of the 5 top springs (Don't need to do top or remaining overload)?

 

Why doesn't ARB add pucks to the leafs to get rid of the squeak?

 

After speaking to a tech at ARB USA a couple weeks back, it's my understanding that they might be doing just that. He had told me that they will soon be implementing a design change.

 

C-Clamp or placing a flat piece of wood(2x4) over it and hitting the other side with a hammer might just do the trick.

 

So the squeak is from the 2nd /3rd to the uppermost leaf? the lower ones have these spacer/insolators already
