People like gadgets and technology. I hear you it's not necessary but it sells and people pay big bucks for it. Smart or not.

Go to the dealer and get a set of keys to each to listen to them side by side. A VERY noticeable difference in sound quality and depth. The Base unit is just okay, but the JBL unit is actually pretty damn good for a Jap/American product (anyone who has owned a German car know what I mean) and at its price point of ~$700 with a full warranty.

It wasn't worth it to me because they didn't have any and I was going to have to wait another 4 months for it, pay a premium (no pun intended), and I liked most of what it offered but none of it was stuff I couldn't live without.

But to say it's dumb to get the new tech..well that's dumb. You got ABS right? You wear a 3 point harness? Blind spot monitoring, rear view cameras, etc absolutely, unequivocally improve safety. Eventually they'll be standard.

Now some of the convenience features like sun roof and dual climate control and heated seats--i would agree with it being not "needed", but everyone has different requirements and use cases. Personally I feel like automatic windows, locks, cruise control, automatic headlights, etc are all table stakes. That should just be standard on modern vehicles. (And yes I know auto headlights is a premium tech option bc Toyota is dumb).

If you wanted a manual windowed, basic radio truck why didn't you just grab an old used one for half of what you paid?

you are missing my point. the point is i paid $20k for a brand new truck without those things. to get those things you pay $35k. that's a lot more money for stuff that really isn't necessary. to be honest i'd rather have my old 1988 toyota truck back that i paid $6k for. it didn't have anything you mentioned on it and it was fine if not better than the new trucks.

and as for used trucks? it's not smart to buy them anymore. they cost almost as much as a new truck unless you get one that already has 250k miles on it. in that case it's burning a qt of oil every week or two so it's not a good option.

i paid $6k for my 1988 truck with 100k on it. a tacoma with 100k on it now is $30k. it's not happening dude. might as well pay $35k and get a new one.

i would have but that wasn't available as an option unless you get all this other stuff. therefore increasing the price by $10k. it's a trap man. don't do it!

I got the tech deal and I'm happy with it... I like the modern conveniences, have had many cars with crank windows etc and I think it sucks. I love that when I grab my door handle the door unlocks, touch another spot on the handle and all doors lock. My wife and I never agree on temp, with dual climate the biatching stopped and we're both comfortable. Heated seats I don't care about but the wife likes em... I like the moonroof, not much into opening it but at times I enjoy the extra light. The JBL system isn't the best, but it's ok... like smitty said, I've had many aftermarket systems and shit always rattles, never goes back just right. If I was 30 I'd prolly go that route but at my age I don't care so much, usually listen to audio books anyway (at least while commuting).

So, more power to those who went frugal, but I'm not calling you stupid for buying what you did... show the same respect huh?

Have had the JBL system in my FJ for the last 3 years. Haven't wanted to upgrade the sound, but have wanted to upgrade to have a rear view camera on the head unit instead of the mirror. Easy decision for me this time since the entune system has the screen.

I have the limited model with the JBL stereo . I think it sounds good , but I've had better stereo systems in other cars . The one thing I do to improve the volume and sound is when listening to my MP3 player or iPod , I turn the volume up on them all the way. this pushes more volume through the stereo system . Now, I'm not talking about blasting it so everyone for four blocks can hear it , but just more clear bass and really good sound. In this respect, very happy with the stereo system . When I listen to music on XM radio , etc. the sound is just okay

after listening to my friend tacoma without jbl, i can say I'm happy i got jbl. the stock isn't bad, but jbl sound better. paying $600 extra doesn't seem much since i paid 42k for the everything. plus i don't trust people tearing up my truck to put in a new system that might be cheaper and sound a little bit better

I spend about four hours a day in my truck. The conveniences are definitely worth it for me. Using the heated seats on my bad back today was worth that extra $15k alone.
