Doesn't really help if you rupture a brake line and are rolling toward the edge of a sheer cliff, but it'll keep you in place if you have to stop on a hill. ;)

You said something about a emergency brake and not being a way to do one. They have a old caddy that uses a caliper with e brake. My 14 4runner has discs with a ebrake. Your point of not having a e brake on disc brakes is invalid. 3 options in a row.

When have you seen a rear brake line rupture. The line lock goes in after the master so if you have a failure and fluid is in the lines it stops

We were talking about retrofit rear discs. Factory rear discs usually have something like a mini-drum brake-type arrangement that uses the inside hub of the disc rotor as the drum and the ebrake cable just draws the shoes up against it to activate the ebrake.

I haven't looked extensively, but I haven't seen any rear disc retrofit kits for a Tacoma that include a provision for an ebrake. Not saying there might not be one somewhere, but clearly the ones Wes and I are considering don't have the provision.

A line lock has to be engaged when the brake fluid is pressurized or it doesn't do squat. All it does is trap the pressurized fluid downstream of the lock so it can't get back to the MC. If you crush a brake line on a rock it could crack and eventually dump all your fluid overboard...or the MC could fail (this happened to me right before the October Camp & Ride last year if you recall), which would mean the MC isn't pressurizing the fluid...meaning the line lock won't do squat in those situations.

In fairness though, I don't think my ebrake would have done a damn thing if I had had to resort to it when the MC failed. Frankly, it's a POS so it wouldn't save ya from rolling off that cliff either.

Old caddy uses a caliper ebrake. I know on the older axles non toyota people used them.

Yours was a master cyl issue most brake lines are on top of the frame or in the frame channel. Yours was a master issue if I recall correctly. But either way it's possible to do anything with money.

Mine run down the inside of the frame, but I'm thinking of the hard lines on the axle, or the hose that goes to them. It's very possible for a large rock to get shifted in such a way that it could crush a hard line, snag a hose, or even for the hose to fail. With no way to maintain pressure downstream, the line lock would be useless.

And yeah, mine was a MC issue, but a failed MC won't pressurize the brake system and thus the line lock would again do nothing.

It's great for a parking brake, but it's not meant for an emergency situation.

You're right about the money thing though. I always thought a good alternative would be something like the pinion brakes they have on the big Rockwell military axles. Using our two piece axle, if you could put a rotor just after the center support bearing (or even on the back of the t-case for that matter) with a cable actuated caliper (like I assume the caddy you mentioned has), that would probably work pretty good. As long as your driveshaft and axles are intact and your diff is locked, you'd be golden.

Yeah, that's the kit I was talking about. ;)

Ok I see where the difference is I said e brake which is what I call them vs parking brake. You are correct lee. A line lock will give a parking brake not a all else fails brake. Only way to do that I'd by a cable.

Maybe set up a t case e brake it it's tha lt important. But if your on a rock and it goes through your brake lines I bet your in somewhere that needs 4wd to get over things so your not just going to roll out of the rocks. But if wanted I'm sure todd could use the plasma cutter to make some brackets for a mustang caliper that has the cable ebrake on the caliper not a brake shoe internal type

Haha, I read the thread...the guy still hasn't got the ebrake hooked up at the time of the last post. Didn't look to see how old it was though. :D

There is no aftermarket t-case brake for the Chain drive cases.

There was a thread at one time somewhere on Pirate that showed a disk brake conversion that used the stock front Tacoma calipers and rotors, but it obviously required some one-off brackets and a wheel spacer.

Whenever I get around to getting my Atlas, I am going to try and run their rear output parking brake setup, if it will work with my configuration. I currently do not have a parking brake and it is somewhat annoying with my truck being a manual.

I completely missed adding that I'd be doing it after an atlas swap, the tcase brake that is.

I'm not entirely sure they will work with the Toyota flanges from AA, their website doesn't really say for sure. I don't see why they wouldn't though. That is, if you are even going with Toyota flanges or upgrading to something else.

What would be kind of neat as long as we're coming up with engineering ideas would be to have a magnetic brake on the driveshaft with a set of electromagnets over an aluminum disc that come on when you apply the brakes. It'd probably extend the life of your brakes by a lot and it'd effectively be an anti-lock braking system since it isn't possible to lock that system up. Basically the same idea they use for regenerative braking systems on hybrids and electric cars.

I think I know what I'm gonna do. Gonna say screw the ebrake and go with discs since it would be easier in the long run

    Look! Billies!

    IMG_20160608_183227269.jpg

Not sure i like them yet or not. They seem a lot more firm than my Nitrochargers. Have to see how they perform on the trail before I really make a judgement. They did handle speed bumps pretty smoothly though so maybe I'm just used to everything being sloppy back there after running so long with a blown out then completely busted shock.

Here's another one flexed a little. Nice view of my ever shortening tail pipe. :D

@Taco No Baka , not positively sure about these but I know some shocks are designed to be mounted a certain way in order for them to work correctly (valving, fluid flow, aid against cavitation, etc...) but I think these are designed to be mounted the other way.
