Got signed up for my 3rd semester of welding class (Pipe), gonna start dropping into the summer class a few days a week after work and get used to running 6010 again and maybe try to learn GTAW on steel instead of just aluminum.

My teacher is excited I'm coming back even though it's just to get my associates instead of just a career certificate.

My bad it was a long day I am not at my best after work better in the morning.

I have seen worse at the Local union training centers that passed .

Just don`t teach yourself any bad habits

Guess so. Bout time to go run some more beads!

That's awesome man. What happened to ship yard welding ? But definitely learn Tig (gtaw) if you can! Tig is where all the demand is and the best paying jobs. There's 15 structural welders for everyone 1 combo welders. The demand for jobs and pay rates make that obvious. If you're gonna learn Tig and want to make big bucks, learn left handed and scratch start. Spoiling yourself with the foot pedal only hurts you.

Lol I wasn't offended in anyway with your reply. I deal with a lot worse when I'm at work.

I'll just keep practicing. Gonna try to backfeed some today. Never done it before so should be fun

I still have the contract but the hire date was pushed back due to a ship that they are currently building being in the way, but I'm not sure if I'm going to accept the job when it comes up because I plan on getting a bachelors degree and I would rather work part time at my current job and do school full time than work full time and school on the weekends.

One of my buddies from last semester learned TIG scratch start, he's pretty decent with TIG now.
But my teacher will probably have us set up on the pedals just because it'll be easier to learn with the fast school schedule.

I'm honestly not planning on welding as a career, I decided to take the 3rd semester because I wanted an associates before I went for a bachelors and because I need to learn TIG better for my '65 C10 project (MIG would work with it but TIG will be easier).

If your having a hard time scoring pipe coupons

Use plates the basic hand motions are the same .

4"x4" x 3/8" or 1/2" what ever you can score easy to bevel with a track burner.

Lots of schools I get into use plates for practice because the prep work is easier.

Plate is easier to come by as well.

We are very limited on pipe so we use a lot of plate.
We don't have the ability to lathe bevel our pipe either, we use an foxy/acetylene cutter to get the bevel and use a grinder to create the land.

We usually make T bars out of 3/8" plate with the base being 4"x8" and the T 2"x8" and weld on them until they are full and when we get used to running beads in that position we go to plates with and without backing straps.

I believe we have to do the navy handicap test (I think that's what my teacher called it) to pass the semester, along with a 6G test, both with SMAW and GTAW.

Im curious what a navy handicap test is..... never heard that before is all.

Is it pretty common in the "real world" to not use eb rings (backing rings/consumables/heard them called lots of things) when doing pipe welds? Just curious cause pretty much all the pipe welding our guys do for nuclear cog stuff has eb rings or some sort of consumable insert. Pipe stuff usually gets VT/PT/RT inspections while canopy welds are just VT/PT though

Never in my life heard them called that lol. One thing ive learned with the Navy is they go the most consistent method which often means easiest way. Granted for what i do im ok with that!.

Now for my own welds....you blow them away

Standard open root weld with the pipe in a vertical position (welds are horizontal) but the pipe is tacked to the table and the pipe is pushed back into the corner with the walls 6" away from the side of the pipe.
You have to weld everything without moving the pipe and have it pass a bend test.

We never use backing rings but we are a low budget operation, we barely use any ceramic tape for open root flux core.

Hey everyone. This was just the sort of thing I was looking for. I've been wanting to learn how to weld for a while but I don't know anyone who does it. I'm wondering if someone could point me toward some good tutorials to teach myself. I'm pretty hands on and pick things up quickly.

There isn't much room at my house and certainly no room in the garage. Is welding something I can do in the backyard? What equipment do I need other than a welding machine and a mask?

    I appreciate any help!

I just started welding myself not to long ago. As for good places to to "learn" online.....Miller actually has decent beginner guides that explain the basics. Weldingtipsandtricks does good videos on youtube. Hobart has some good video on basics on youtube too.

As for what you need to start...machine, mask, gloves, and gas. That will get you up and running. If you are like me, youll start with the basics and picks up things you find you need after that

As for welding outside....it can be done but its my understanding MIG can be harder outside if its windy. But someone more knowledgable can comment more on outdoors welding

Welding with gas outside can be tricky, you gotta turn up your gas to keep the weld shielded.
Stick welding is the easiest done outside which is the reason it is used for pipeline welding.

If you plan on welding any position other than flat you will want a leather welding jacket, however you can get by (temporarily) with a heavy long sleeve shirt.

If at all possible take some classes !!

It is so easy to pick up bad habits learning on your own.

I run hard wire outside all the time just not in gale force winds just use some common sense

Then I am teaching myself Gynecology should be easy from all the videos

Tomorrow is gonna be fun! Finally found a place that sells prebeveled and machined coupons to practice with. Most places want to sell 10 pairs each minimum which was pretty costly. Ordered 3 pairs which means at least 6 practice runs on the machined bevel. And a bunch of practice with hand cutting and grinding after lol

You currently going to school for your Pipe Certs in Texas? I bet there are tons of companies out there looking for qualified pipe welders.

I have been to school. Welding in field now. I'd be comfortable taking a pipe test with stick but I'm aiming for the tube welder/combo welder side of the power plant and refinery world which is tig. This is the standard tube test coupon size and bevel.
