right now i have a 98 tacoma, but in about a year or so im going to be buying a brand new or maybe one year old truck. i want it to have 4WD, but at the same time don't want that extra gas waste. do these new tacoma models ahve optional 4wd? where i can switch between 4wd and 2wd?

Kinda hard to switch into 4 wheel drive if you only have 2 wheel drive :)

All 4x4s are 2wd until you engage 4x4.

    A Tacoma isn't AWD.
