Trying to figure out what this noise is.....

Slowly started happening over the past few months and now it's all my brain hears. 3.4l V6 184k

I can't tell if it's injectors, manifold or knocking...

It's obviously louder when near a wall or barrier. It rises and falls with my RPMs.

Doesn't matter if the motor is cold or warm.

    Help!!!

I have a similar ticking sound that's gradually gotten louder over the past couple of months, mine ticks faster the faster my truck is going, almost like something is stuck to the wheel...kind of sounds like a playing card stuck in the spoke of a bicycle wheel.

However, it goes away as soon as I push my clutch in, which narrows it down to the transmission. I have a 5 speed. Does yours do the same or are you an automatic?

I'm thinking mine might be the throwout bearing or possibly the flywheel

To be honest I haven't tried. I will on my way home from work. Mine does rise and fall with RPM so if I push my clutch in the noise drops as fast as my RPMs and stays at this steady ticking at idle. I have a 5spd 4x4

Going to possibly try sea foam in the vacuum line to check for manifold leaks.

Just seems loud for a normal noise. The video makes it sound more metallic. In person it sounds more like air like a "pfft pfft pfft "

I had a ticking like that in my '98 manual 4cyl. It sounded like a flywheel. Much like yours. It was there the entire time I had the truck (bought it at 35k miles).

What if I told you my clutch has been getting worse and worse. It seems glazed. Like I'll ride it just the smallest amount, then all day it feels like total crap. Never slips but shutters as I pull away from a stop.

    Guessing flywheel.....

    It's a manual 5spd trans

This may sound strange but try loosening your belts. Friend basically stole his tacoma with a similar sound and the dealer told the previous owner the motor was bad. Ended up the belts got tite and caused a noise

Sounds like an exhaust manifold leak to me.

I agree... does it sorta sound like an accelerating motorcycle in the cab.

One thought on the sound that rises and falls with RPMs could be an exhaust leak. I had a cracked exhaust manifold years ago that made a similar sound. However it was on a different vehicle.

+1 on the belts. Sometimes it is amazing what happens when you just adjust things to spec.

So I loosened both belts and nothing changed so I started feeling around to see if I could feel the tick. And I did. It's right here on this ignition coil. I can feel the tap when I place my hand on the black box. It's only on the one I am pointing at. Should I just replace the part? Could it be a deeper problem?

Could be a valve adjustment. Pull the coil to see if you have any arcing, look for black residue in a concentrated area on the coil tube as well the tube in the head. Worse case scenario is a loose spark plug.

+1 on what aught2taco said. I would pull the coil and look at the boot for signs of arcing. While the coil is out, get a socket on the plug and make sure it is snug.

I remember when I did my plugs and wires about 6mo ago that I had carbon build up on that side of the motor where the coil packs slide in. I will check back this afternoon with photos and more. Thanks guys! love this forum.

I had a sound similar to this a couple months ago, but I had a huge loss in power. It ended up being the plugs and wires, I replaced them and all was fine. I was told that the cheaper wires that I put in earlier were arching on one another. Do you have any power loss?

beantown, I must say my truck does feel sluggish but I thought it might have been the milage 187k.... I did just snag run of the mil wires from o-riley..... should I just go get OEM?

That's funny, I think I got my old ones at O'riley too. Yes, go factory plugs and wires, see if that helps. Mine would not drive, it was shuttering and had no power.

Well, I am dumb. Took me all of 10 min to realize what it was. LOOSE PLUG. it must have vibrated loose in the last 6mo and finally started making more noise. Tightened it up and all is silent. I must say, I will probably go OEM wires as I am planning a 10day trip from TX to CO here in a few weeks and looking at the wires again, they are so tiny. Better safe than sorry. Thanks again guys. Hopefully this helps someone down the road. simple fix.
