I'm looking to upgrade my 1999 Tacoma TRD prerunner. It's the 2.7L automatic. I want to keep it a daily but also be able to romp some decent trails. I was thinking an OEM coil replacement and running my friends 14" shock mounts on the rear. While tucking 33x12.50s underneath it. Anyone have any ideas on shocks and if the 2.7L can even handle 33s? Also does anyone know if I can pull the bedsides on a 99?

33s with definitely make the 2.7 slower than it already is. You probably won't be going through too much with a 2WD

Regearing would help power, but not traction. By the time you've spent all that, why not sell the prerunner and get a 4WD V6?

Well I'm not really looking to crawl stuff. I'm located in California and it's mostly fire roads and flat trails.
