It is definitely a challenge for me to find a happy middle ground for a 1-2 shift in this truck. It's either a slowww smooth shift from 1st to 2nd with people getting frustrated and passing me, a harder "normal" speed shift or a complete bro shift at 4000+ RPM which keeps up speed and seems to be smoother.

Also you have to almost be at a complete stop to get into 1st. I've found 7-8mph is a tricky speed to be at if you are coming to that speed in 2nd.

Other than that, perfectly fine but overall I'd say it's great and if I could do it over again I would buy the manual transmission every time.

    What is a "bro shift?"

If at lower speed, hard to get into 1st, doesn't truck have enough torque to keep it in 2nd in low speed, or does it lug the engine ?

I don't know just made the bro shift thing up.

The engine starts to lug at that speed in 2nd. Minimum speed in 2nd seems to be 10mph, maybe 9. Shifter doesn't want to move down easily into 1st until maybe 5-6 mph. Others may have different experiences.

IMO, if are not at a dead stop, it has plenty of oomph to stay in 2nd. Any rolling movement at all, and I stuck with 2nd. Again, I was not in heavy traffic though.

    Thank you.

Low speed shifting is important to me, as few days a week I will be driving it in horrendous 405 traffic, which sees 2-6MPH for about 20 miles or so.

I actually find it easier to shift into 1st at low speed than my '94 Toyota truck and 2 different Subarus I've owned.

If the truck has any movement what so ever you can keep it in second. First is only for dead stop starts

This. I do lots of rolling stops at stop signs in Second. It takes it a second for the torque to get you accelerating, but it does not feel like I am lugging the motor.

Stock everything yes, but now that I'm on 34s and more weight to the truck, stop and go traffic I just sit in 1st, second seems to lug to much if I'm below 10 MPH

This is my experience also. Low RPM shift from 1-2.... great. High RPM shift from 1-2.... great. Mid RPM shift from 1-2.....takes some patience.

That's what I mean, if I go below 9 or 10 mph in second there is a very slight rumble, almost no acceleration response and the RPM'S are maybe at 750 at best. To me that is lugging the engine, but I could be wrong. I admit I don't have years of experience.

If I need to travel at 7-8 mph I just hit the brakes until 4-5 mph, go to first and cruise along in 1st. Someone please correct me though if this isnt the right thing to do.

It is not wrong. but this truck will go along fine at 5mph in second gear without any lugging(starting to buck because u are going to slow in a certain gear). u wont have as much acceleration and torque, but it will do it just fine. would not go much slower though.

I used to do this all the time in my Subaru - no problems at all.

You guys are totally making me consider going for the MT again, haha. If they had a long bed with the MT it'd be an even closer call!

I'm not sure we'll have a choice in another 10 years or so. Maybe a few sports cars, but that's about it. I'll be shocked if the next gen Taco has a manual option. I've had both, but have recently gone back to manuals since I moved to a rural area.

Easily done 10-15 years from now with variable electric motors operating without a gearbox. May not be a manual, but def not an auto trans!

Good idea. Nothing wrong with keeping stuff you like, especially the stuff you like driving.
