I'm currently stranded with a no start. The truck started right up without a hitch. I drove
literally 1 mile to drop the kids off at daycare. Get in my truck and it will not turn over. And the lights are dim like a dead battery. We just had our hotter days of the year this weekend at 100 degrees. So I figured dead battery. I bummed some tools a cleaned the heavily corroded terminals. And checked for tightness and still nothing. I then was able to get a jump. But it still just barely makes a straining quarter rotation. I then pulled the cables loose and tried jumping it bypassing the battery. And am getting the same result. The truck only has 80k on it. It seems a bit early for a starter. But that's what is looking like at this point. You guys got any ideas?

even with a jump, mine would barely turn over. it was a bad battery. id suggest getting a new battery and see if that works for ya.

It's a auto by the way. So that rules out a NS switch. JP yours would not jump at all? The part that has me confused is I bypassed the battery all together with a running car.

My battery died in much the same way (fine for 2 starts in the morning, completely shot at lunch) but jumping it allowed me to start the truck right up. Still, I'd get a new battery in it as a first step. Hope you get it figured out, man!

Pretty sure this is the original battery. So it seems at first to be the likely culprit. But after bypassing no so much.

Load test the battery first before buying a new one.

was your battery still hooked up to the truck? if you mean that you removed your battery and just clipped the jumper cables to your wires, then that would have been slightly different (I would assume that would be the same as using the other trucks battery). but yea, I would get cab lights and nothing else when I had a donor vehicle hooked up. I let the other truck sit for 15 min in an attempt to charge the battery enough to get her to start and still nada. its not the first time ive had a battery die completely and not allow me to jump it off. I put a new battery in and boom. back to normal. a dead cell in a battery can ruin your day haha.

Yes I completely pulled the cables off the battery. And hooked the jumpers to the cables. 100% bypassing the battery. It was straining to do a quarter turn. And the cables jumpers were about melted from the heavy current draw. That's why I'm thinking its a starter issue. But I have done several searches. And it doesn't appear to be a issue.

the cables shouldn't be melting.... that sounds like you had the cables mixed up. ive done that too :anonymous:. if you have it hooked up correctly, you shouldn't see any smoke or feel any heat from the cables at all. now again, ive never disconnected my battery to jump, but that just doesn't sound right.

Cables were correct. I now have a voltmeter and the battery has 12.6v. But drops to 4.6 when I hit the key. Now not getting any attempt at a turnover. Just pulled battery and running it to get load tested. If it's good gonna try a starter I guess.

That much voltage drop means bad battery.

Just had it tested. Showed low charge. But still had 337cc on reserve. No short or open. It's not even turning over now.

Went to Autozone in search of a starter. Just for giggles I had them test the battery. And low and behold it failed. Always good to get a second opinion. So I got another one and just put it in and fired right up, still confused on why it wouldn't jump start. And even with bypassing the battery. But I guess that was best case scenario. That starter looked like a bitch to get to. It look like maybe pulling the wheel would be the best way.
