My problem is that part of the roof is already prone to ice dams, as it is not very steep. Already got that against me and if it backs up and freezes near the skylight it was another battle to fight.

Had a roof leak a few years back in the front part of the house roof that was coming from a vent stack and traveling the pipe and rafter and showing up 35 feet away.....took forever to find it.

Ice dams are generally a product of poor insulation detailing in the attic

We have had the glass seals give up on one set. But with what is availed today for flashing there is no reason for one to leak. We have had issues with them in commercial metal roofed applications. As there are more seams and such.

Here in the pa/de/md area alot of older homes were very poorly insulated as heating oil or woodstove were cheap. And as was said above, alot of people who own some tools call themselves professionals

If it was removed and filled in properly the water is probably coming from higher up.
I've been in attics tracing leaks and it's amazing how far water can travel from actual leak to where it shows

Anybody have experience with VAT tiles?

I am planning on tearing out the carpet on my stairs and replacing with hardwood. I removed the carpet and padding, and see VAT tiles on the stair treads and landing. Is it safe for me to remove the VAT tiles myself if I wet the tiles and wear the proper mask with asbestos cartridge? I have read VAT tiles are not friable and of little concern as long as it is not sanded.

Also, what about the mastic? Does that have asbestos in it?

I don't know much about VAT tiles because I mostly deal with fire proofing that is asbestos containing and some mastic with asbestos. It's true it's not friable but why take the risk? If it becomes friable it's not just you its also the immediate area around you because the fibers can travel. I know when we remove concrete work with vinyl tile over asbestos containing Mastic we can saw cut out the concrete and throw it away that way because it won't become friable. YMMV

You could probably call your state or county environmental department and ask. Asbestos is graded into several risk factors with differing precautions.

I'm going to be putting up a short cedar privacy fence to replace ugly chain link. Would this be the stuff to use to finish it? What's the maintenance like with it?

The fence will be bought rough and run through the planer for a smooth finish to be hung.

So just finishing up the flat soffits

I started in the middle of the span to make sure the rows would be equal on both sides so when we install the retro potlights they align on board centres and are equal in all 4 corners

To stay on track I found centre and chalked a line for my first board , installing a plywood cleat to keep the boards from migrating as I seated the rest of the rows

Having done all the boards on one side I removed the plywood fence and installed a spline to change direction of the tongue and carried on the other way

All done , just need to hit it with a coat of the Sunfast
