is it just me or are trucks getting lower?

i saw that somebody said the 1st gen sat higher than the 2nds...and this years tundras look very low alot lower than the gen before...whats up with this?

 

Have you actually measured them, or checked frame to ground clearances?
I do know they are running much larger rims and lower profile tires, which can account for the illusion they are lower.

To combat my truck "looking" lower, I lifted it.

 

I'm pretty sure the Tundra's are higher, the Tacoma's may also be, but I know from the two 1st series Tacoma's I had that the step in height is either lower, or contoured for easier entry. I sometimes had to almost jump up into the first series Tacoma with my short leggies, and at stock height. Might be the lower seats to comply with the new for 03 or 04 head protection standards from rear end collisions. It must have been 03, as I bought a new Jeep in 03 and everyone complained about the seats that year; they were lowered ~3" closer to floor, and the backrest raised by about 4". I am 5'7" and when in the '03 Jeep, and a '04 company Ranger I had several inches of headrest above the very top of my head.

 

idk what it is but the new tundras do look lower and maybe it is the bigger rims and low profile tires but the trds looked low too but eh who knows until i find the measurements

 

My friend has a 98 tacoma w/ a 3 in lifts (spacers in front and blocks in rear)...before i Lifted my truck.....our mirrors sat at the same Level. So my opnion is that the newer tacoma actually sit higher

 

Maybe the first generation tacomas look higher becase the body is smaller which makes the wheels appear larger in comparison. Thats what I've always thought anyway. I have a 2nd gen, and a friend of mine has a 1st gen. Before I lifted mine they were level when parked next to each other. But when you looked at them indiviually his looked taller.

First gens actually had about 1" more ground clearance than the 05+.

Trucks are getting lower and more carlike. Because people dont want trucks anymore. They want something with a bed that can haul and entire family, get 25MPG, and ride like a Cadillac. That is where the industry is heading. I expect the 3rd gen Taco to be lower and less rugged than the 2nd Gen, just like the 2nd gen is lower and less rugged than the 1st gen. Thats just how the market works.

Not entirely. There will always be a market for real trucks. Think: construction, laborers, etc.

 

Sad but true, we are in the minority. I was never inconvenienced by going out to lock in the hubs, pulling the handle at the transfer case to engage the 4x4 transmission. I never found the ride "harsh", just got a louder stereo to drown out the highway song by rough cut tires, didn't mind getting up into the truck, or getting it dirty. I never even thought of whether the leaf springs were going to hold up, or that the tailgate would fail. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, but I am easy on it.
