My brother is looking at the following truck, help appreciated:

2001 Tacoma 4 door, SR5 V6, crew cab, 4x2. Has Snugtop Bed Cap.
    One owner.
    All records from Toyota dealer.
    TB changed at 100K miles.
    180K miles.
    Asking $8800

    San Diego truck.
    Frame is original.

$8,800 is a lot for a pre-runner. You can get 4x4 with that kind of mileage and money. If the truck is a California truck, I wouldn't worry about rust. The worst would be surface rust from being close to the ocean.

    Here's a good example:
1998 Toyota Tacoma prerunner 4x4. TRD model so it has the locking diff as well. Clean title in hand. The truck has been smogged already. The plates are up to date as well. Has a v6 with a automatic transmission. 147xxx miles runs great. Power windows and locks. Tires are good. Clean in and out no tears or stains on the interior. The paint is good and clean no fading or anything like that. Asking 6850 calls only 760-453-8822 hablo espanol

Thank you very much. He needs space, so no Access Cab Tacomas. He is looking at DC Tacoma or Access Cab Tundra.

No problem. Double cabs always fetch a higher price for 1st gen.

How is that a Prerunner 4x4?

Btw I paid 11k for my Prerunner. Only had 89,000 miles though. 180,000 miles is kinda high for that price.

Not my truck, just saw it in San Diego craigslist. I paid $13K for a 2003 trd OR 4x4 AC stick with 89K miles a couple of years ago. That was at a Toyota dealership in Las Vegas.

Considering its San Diego the whole frame issue is a non factor, had it been a rust belt frame then this wouldn't even be considered. The price is going to vary based on region, California is a tough place to find 1st gen DC 4x4s as is Texas here, they're not as prevalent yet hold their value tremendously.
I would say a prerunner DC for $8800 and 180k is just a tad much and I'm sure better finds can be found given the time and urgency to buy.

I too have been searching for a 01-04 DC and even with high miles I've seen quite a few over $14k so a good conditioned one at $8800 does not seem unreasonable. I would still offer less and see what happens .

DC's cost more. There was just one for sale around the block from me and it was a 2003 DC pre-runner with a lift and 130k with asking price of $13K. I don't see it anymore so I guess it sold.

Regarding the frame, if it's spent it's entire life in Southern California (especially San Diego) then you have zero reason to worry about rust.

edit: okay okay, realistically there's always the chance that the previous owner spent a few months out of every year snowboarding in the mountains during winter then romping along the beach in his truck to go surfing all summer. In that case, yes...you should check for rust.

I bought my '04 a few months ago from a dealership in San Diego, the truck spent most of it's life in Arizona and the last few months in SD. The frame looked (looks) immaculate, brand new.

I paid $13k for my 2003 2wd 4cyl double cab pre runner with 53k miles . It also came dealer optioned with 265/75-16 tires , also the dealership installed a TRD supercharger . I'm the 2nd owner

All of the recalls have been addressed and taken care of , just recently I had my local Toyota dealer do the frame recall and it was found to be in excellent condition . The original owner purchased my truck in So cal from Toyota of Cerritos

    We bought it for $8300

Truck also has bedrug. Probably sell the snug top on the top, and get some money back. It was original owner, so clean, and 43 records at local Toyota dealer, and all stock.

Will post pics when we get it this weekend.

Brother is happy. His kids will be happy :)

On the sticky it says "First gen has 5 lug on 2wd models"

The DC we just bought, is 6 lug

Those are base models, like fleet vehicles. SR5s and TRDs are 6 lug, does that truck have a rear locker?

    NO.

4x4 only, or it's just a car with a box on the back.
