    That's really strange but at the same time sounds familiar. With all the wireless networks and the switching from land line to tower and vice versa, the phone system is far more complex than it was many years ago. All of the switching used to be done with physical relays. Nowadays virtually everything is digital and done by computer so glitches are very possible and more likely to occur.

    My home phone rings off the hook every other day it seems. And if I actually answer it, which I usually don't, there's no one on the other end wtf

    Man, I would hate to have that! I would always be worried that the cops might think I was the drug dealer. If it was me I would have to change my number.

    Alas caller id can easily be faked. I understand you need a T1 (multiple phone lines) to do it.
    I do not answer calls from unknown numbers and I do not return calls from unknown numbers if they don't leave a message.
    I hope I'm not missing calls from unicorns with a gold horn carrying winning lotto tickets.

    Next time, tell them your computer is an abacus, and ask if they can upgrade that to prevent it from crashing. :rofl:

    There used to be (and may still be) services that you could pay for that would spoof the caller ID and you could have the number appear as whatever you wanted it to be.

    One thing you have to be careful of is if you do return a phone call, check to see where it is. I read something about where a call would come in from some country in the Caribbean. The phone would ring one time then disconnect to help ensure you could not get to the phone in time. When you called it back the jacked up long distance rate was something like $20.00 per minute. Pretty sneaky.:mad:

    You're correct, you'd be surprised how easy it is in the modern world to spoof outbound caller ID; even more frightening is how little control (read: none) the receiving carrier has over the caller ID. There's typically zero way to trace it as they're almost ALWAYS over seas.

    It's not a person it's a machine calling you to verify there's a person on the line.

    Here are the evil area codes I know of:

    900 phone number or one with an area code of 876, 868, 809, 758, 784,
    664, 473, 441, 284 or 246 Those codes seem all-American, but are
    actually for foreign countries, with the clock running at $5 a minute
    or more.

    268, Antigua or Barbuda;
    809, Dominican Republic;
    876, Jamaica;
    284, British Virgin Islands;
    473, Grenada.

    Something else I remebered, caller id doesn't always work. I asked a 911 operator why the always ask for my number, she said caller id isn't always accurate even if no one is trying to spoof it.

    Yep, unfortunately as in many other businesses and industries, the quality and technical ability of telephone carrier customer service has really declined in the last few decades.

    Yes. Caller ID is purely on the sending carrier to actually provide AND the receiving carrier to have an updated record that has the name. There's zero incentive for the two carriers to share information between each other.

    Although, if you're getting that you should call your carrier, emergency service is something they're arm-twisted into getting right. It's surprising how well it actually works.

    You guys are all dummys. Just do what I do... don't ever answer the phone!! I never answer the damn thing- you literally could remove the incoming call feature on my cell phone. Could be Penelope Cruz calling- I don't give a fuck, I AIN'T ANSWERING. Even my friends and family... they all know I don't answer the phone. I know what you are saying- "Even your friends?? Well then I'd never call you!" and I'd say, "Mission accomplished." The phone is for texting, Facebook on the toilet and me calling for take out. Also, can we eliminate the US Post Office? There is not one god damn thing I get in my mailbox that I ever want or need- IN ANY FUCKING WAY. It's ridiculous. Do you know how irate I get when a fucking Yellow Pages shows up in my mailbox? KIDDING ME???? YELLOW PAGES????
