Looking into getting a winch...

so i have a couple questions:

1. how strong of a winch should i get? would like 8000lbs winch work?
2. how should i go about mounting it?
3. is it possible to have a removable mount set up so i can move it to the rear of the truck, say like the trailer hitch?
4. do i need a new front bumper of brush guard or something to mount it?

any other advice would be great thanks.

 

Warn makes a winch mount that lets you slide it into the receiver hitch on the truck. So you can get another hitch welded on the front, then you can put your winch wherever you need it.

If you go this route, you can save a lot of $$$. Instead of buying 2 winch bumpers and 2 winches. That's what I'm gonna do because I don't want to have to get out and keep swaping the big ass thing from front to rear all the time. And it looks sick.

 

i bought a smittybilt xrc8 with syn line. so far its been great, but ive only been stuck once. if you want a multi mount, you will have to go with one from mile marker or one similar to it. the warn one will not work unless you do quite a bit of fabrication

Yeah man an 8K should work fine, I would go with a 9.5K if I was gonna do mine but I would use it for utility stuff other than getting my truck un-stuck. The reciever mount is pretty slick and is the way to go. Even when I build my plate bumper I'm gonna go with the reciever mount. That way you aren't limited to front only pull or rear only pull. My buddy has that set-up on his '92 and it's great.

 

The good thing about a reciever mount is that you can remove it therefore decreasing weight so youre not wasting gas trying to push a winch and winch bumper around. Plus its kind of a security issue also. You can remove it so its safe at your house when youre not needing it!

 

i really like the reciever idea aswell, but i have never seen a reciever mount on the front of a truck though? where could i get one?

 

the reason i didnt go with one is because they go below the bumper. in my opinion it wouldve been to low and more than likely would get hung up on stuff. i bought a custom bumper off craigslist and had a reciever mount installed.

just google tacoma front reciever or call 4 wheel parts. they had one ordered for me for right at 180 if i recall

or you could pick one up from a junk yard rig and fab it in between the frame rails. just cut the 2 inch square out of the bumper for it to stick through...

 

be careful on how ever you do it..I had the winch stolen off my old 4runner since it was just bolted on. Weld it if you plan on leaving it on the truck

 

That's why I'm getting internal winch bumpers. So if they want to steal my shit, they're gonna have a helluva time trying.
