I'll third that. They think Jeebus has got their back so they drive like total assholes. It's way more hazardous to your health than alcohol, tobacco or coffee. I get used to it but then when I travel out of state I realize how fucked Utah drivers are. I just got back from a trip to Los Angeles and I was shocked at how polite and orderly people drive on the freeway compared to home.

 

Sounds about right. Depending on the insurance company, responsibility could go as high as 50/50, because the Tacoma did not hold the lane. In either outcome, the Tacoma shouldn't be dinged for it.

I drove through Salt Lake area heading to/from Rock Therapy.... worst drivers I've ever seen! Add in a trailer behind my truck with the 4runner on it and everyone goes full 'tard around you on the freeway thinking they can beat you or that you dont need that stopping room in front of the truck between the car i'm following.

 

I didn't realize bad drivers in Utah was a thing until now... In So Cal most of the time the drivers are fine except the occasional texter. As you get closer to the west side, we have more @$%hole drivers.

 

I get it and I'm not for Utah or Mormon, I've been there.

 

I saw something very similar to this from a little further away on my may into work this morning. It wasn't as bad thankfully, but it appeared that some POS Hyundai caused a nice Dodge Ram to get pretty banged up.

There are entirely too many idiots out there driving who don't belong on the road.

 

I am not sure how the insurance companies will handle it since that's a whole mess of its own that usually varies from state to state.

But, more than likely, Tacoma is at fault. There was no contact between the black SUV and the Tacoma. The SUV is a phantom vehicle, a contributing factor, but not at fault as far as traffic rules are concerned. Civil liability is different.

Same deal if you swerve to avoid an animal in the road... (which is the complete wrong thing to do, since you increase your chance of a crash ten fold) if you don't make contact with the animal it's your fault and your insurance will say when you tell them about the sasquatch in the road you avoided.

Edit, just watched it again, i thought the Tacoma hit the pt loser first, but it didn't. In this case the pt loser should be at fault because they lost control and caused the first impact.

Yes, you have to be under control of your vehicle. Had the Tacoma maintained his lane and got hit by Danny douchebag in the suv, then Danny is on the hook.

But taco swerved, pt swerved, pt lost control of their vehicle and collided with taco.

SUV could get a failure to maintain lane ticket if they find it, then civil goodness could go from there.

 

And i edited my original post after you quoted it... Thought tacoma clipped pt initially but rewatched it and saw first contact was pt into tacoma.

 

Easy way to think of it... Three cars in a row following each other. A in front of B, B in front of C.

A hits the brakes causing B to jam on brakes and C hits the back of B. A "caused" the initial chain reaction but C is at fault for hitting B.

 

So is moral of the story that if some loser backs out of his driveway into your path, you need to make at least minimal contact with his vehicle before you take out his mailbox or you will end up paying to repair your truck and his mailbox? What if you have dashcam video showing he pulled out in front of you and you chose to take out his mailbox over T-boning his vehicle?

Ok, well call up your local sheriff, state trooper or officer and insurance company and then let me know what they tell you. Some things vary from state to state... so anything is possible.

And like I said originally. What a police report says and what your insurance decides can be two very different outcomes.

 

Lots of traffic having to pass the vehicle with the dash cam on the right hand side. Looks like he caused traffic to pile up in the right two lanes trying to get around him.
