I towed a U-Haul Tailer from Missouri to Texas (about 720 miles). It was a single axle 5'x8' covered trailer. I hauled two heavy couches...approximately 1300 lbs gross trailer load (Note: lots of wind drag load). I have the sport V6 4x4 tow package with auto tranny. I averaged 15 mpg. I didn't use cruise because the tranny shifted around way too much. However, the tach never went over 3500 rpm. The tranny spend a lot of time in 5th gear up all slight hills (with the tach around 3000). The speed limit I traveled was around 65 mph most of the time. Now cities and towns when the speed limit was around 55 mph...I could get around 17 mpg. The Oklahoma turnpike (speeding around 80 mph) I averaged 13 mpg. I suppose I'm ok with these results (though I hoping for slight better results...couple mpg at least).
Note: on the way home without the trailer, I averaged 22 mpg at around 70 mph...sweet I can even get 24 mpg around 55 mph !

 

I'm looking at these speeds you guys are towing and wonder if you have any idea what you're doing. Almost all trailer tires are rated at 65 mph max and they must be inflated to max pressure to do so. Be safe out there.

Pretty sure U Haul has a speed restriction policy of 65.

I regularly haul my car trailer below the posted 70 mph speed limit, never exceeding 65mph except for short spells. There's a reason for that...when running fast, the tires heat up and can explode just like the tires on 18 wheelers; this can cause damage to your trailer fenders AND can cause the trailer (single axle mostly) to swerve causing you to lose control. It's not worth the extra few miles you'll make in an hour traveling over the speed rating of the tire. Next time you tow and stop to get gas, feel the sidewalls and see how hot they are compared to the tires on the tow vehicle.

 

Yes, I often drive 55 without a trailer if I'm not in a hurry. I enjoy driving on the right with all the truckers.

 

Towed some old steel close to 300 miles one way and was impressed on how well the taco did she definitely earned her keep. Was getting 10 to 12 mpg in the NM winds and some steep hills, the ect button helped out.

 

I have news for you, after driving 2500 miles recently, it's clear truckers don't drive 55 in the right lane.

I did a 1400 mile RT towing a little Casita trailer that weight about 2500#. Averaged 13 mph. Little Tacoma struggles mightily to get up hills (not mountains), but she'll get there revving to 3000+ in 4th gear.

 

Your right, in California, they drive one left of the right lane at whatever speed they can.

 

To me it seems like 3,000 RPM really isn't working the engine much on the 3.5. It likes to rev and feels like 3,000 RPMs is more like 2500 or 2000 on another older motor which wasn't designed to spin as fast. I cringe when I get over 3500 RPM on my 2002 but 3,000 RPM feels right at home on the 2016.

 

The vast majority of the semis I observed were not at 65 or below.

'16 taco is the little truck that can!
Hooked on to a u-haul weighing 5209lbs in Edmonton and drove to New Orleans over the past 3 days. My '16 is an access cab, 6MT, OR. I didn't haul anything in the box or cover it for any added aerodynamics on this trip either. The weather wasn't in my favour as about 2/3 of the trip was into some serious headwinds as I travelled through Sask, ND and all the way to KC via I-29 (where it was 100F yesterday!) The wind was so tough at times that I couldn't get out of 4th or past 50mph while slurping at a rate of 10-11mpg. From KC to St. Louis, the hills were pretty fun, allowing me to test trailering at higher speeds, and the discovering the torque that the taco is capable of. Running the hills I felt comfortable hitting 80mph in the valleys to get up and over the tops of those hill on I-70. Very few shifts into 5th and the truck was able to hold 60mph in 6th up and over the tops of most, but all of the steepest of these rollers. This section I didn't have any wind but the hills put the taco's motor to the test. This section from KC to St. Louis I averaged 13.2mpg. From St. Louis to Memphis I set the cruise at 73mph. Nice V6 growl on some of the longer hills during this section, it would quickly drop to 60-62mph and hold that speed up and over the top. If the speed dropped below 60, I mean exactly at 59mph, the cruise would shut off. I'm not sure what went on but as I headed south from Memphis to NOLA, I got readings of progressively increasing mpg's of 13.6, 14.4, 14.9 and 16.2mpg's out of each tank. WTF? better fuel economy as I headed south? What I liked best about this route is I set the cruise at 73mph and left it there and the Taco pulled that trailer very well. Other than that, the truck was quite comfortable during 15+hrs a day behind the wheel. I don't miss my Tundra at all!

 

Ive had multiple big rigs push me driving down the interstate with cruise set at 80-82, the idiot drivers who are from the next state over routinely run 95+ on the interstate (passenger vehicles of course).
It all depends on your locale.

 

Same here damnfingers I keep my speed around 60-65 when towing. Trailer tires are not designed for high speed they will and can delaminate.
