thinking about trading in my auto trans for a manual

-thinking about trading in my auto transmission for a manual.... this tacoma is too awesome to be shifting at 1500 rpm to bog out at 1000rpm in over drives. and its not getting good mileage IMO........ this truck wasn't made for driving at 1000 rpm IMO. i hear bogging sounds when its trying to drive at 1000rpm how can that be good for MPG or the motor?? when i drive it in ECT MODE it revs high past 2000 mpg in a very unsmooth way and gets the same MPG?? its so weird.. is the motor bogging giving it bad MPG's? .. going past my rant i love everything else about the truck !! i only had the car 3-4 months and 1700miles on it. its a AC OR 4x4 and i would have to trade for the sport AC 4x4 to get the manual in AC... the AC OR didnt come with manual, is why i went with the Auto trans , along with what was available at the moment .
-a few questions

-anybody trade back in a basically brand new truck
- how much $ money will i lose if i make this type trade in at a dealer?
-is it better to trade it in sooner or later?
-am i crazy?

 

I'm no doctor, but you sound crazy!

If you trade it in you probably going to eat anywhere from 3k-5k worth of depreciation.

It would be best to private sale and then go back fresh to buy what you need/want.

 

Try driving it around in "S" mode for a week, S4 around town but let the truck shift itself and S5 or S6 on the interstate. If you're still not pleased with how it drives, get something else.

 

agreed! thats where im at with it ive been testing it all .....i been driving it ALL the time in S-4 and S-5 the last Month..... a few times in s-6 on high way..S-mode is WAY better then D ..nothing worst then stepping on the gas hard in D then letting off for a second and it double shifts up to 6th gear 1000rpm .. the ECT mode revs way too high in first gear and even in 2nd for me. its not smooth at all. it might just be where i live and drive.... idk maybe the gearing is not a good match with where im at ... but yes thank God it has S -mode

 

If you're still not pleased even with S mode and you feel you'd be happier with a manual then get a manual.

I agree above that private sale would likely bring top dollar for your current truck.

Just remember with a manual, there's only one mode of driving, sometimes it's great when you're on the interstate or accelerating and you can row through the gears, sometimes it's a real PITA if you're in stop and go traffic every day during your commute.

At least with the AT, you have more choices in how you want the truck to perform.

I'm a 100% manual guy but the Tacoma I got was an auto. The stick is laboring and if I want to sell it in a few years, 90% of Tacomas sold are autos...so with the manual transmission I will struggle to sell.

 

I own a manual, i had it shipped 3200 miles just to get it. I never thought i could love a truck as much as i love my new 2016-TRD-OFFRoad 4x4 Manual. This thing is an absolute blast to drive. every time i drive it i can tap into the power, the auto doesnt allow you to. In 4th gear at 5500 rpm Iam flying by people,still pulling at 90mph. It also shifts effortlessly due to ball bearings that are new for 2016. I also test drove the auto and felt it was a dog,unless you mash the throttle. Also in traffic its not that bad because it wont stall out until your completely stopped. So i just creep. Take the hit go get a manual, you wont regret it.I added a pool ball shift knob-sweet!!!

 

That is super cool, I was going used and didn't feel like going from MD to NC to get a manual w/no warranties (2010) so I went with the auto. The kind of traffic we have around here in Balt/DC it's actually not a bad thing. I've driven the 2016 stick and it is much improved over the 2015 version, use it well!

 

Since a manual and the sport is slightly cheaper and you'll be a repeat customer at the same dealer on top of them knowing they can easily flip the truck i bet you wouldnt get hurt too bad. Im all for manuals, i wish more people would buy them to show manufacturers that people still want them.

 

I love my MT, it's just a lowly 4-cyl though... Lol...

Makes driving more interactive but sometimes I would love an auto, hahaha

I say keep the AC OR, that's one sexy truck!

Now if you could get a DCSB OR with the manual!

 

Manual comes down to technique, so I can't agree with that comment. All your fancy auto modes can be achieved by varying how and when you shift with a manual. Plus Toyota gave us tri-pedalers better gearing as icing on the cake.

OP if you're willing to take the $5k bath, the manual Tacoma is awesome.

 

I agree, people that are not good at driving stick are the only ones who complain about driving stick. Ive never met anyone who drives a stick complain about driving it. I drive a stick and will continue to until my knee gives out or until its not longer an option. If you know what you're doing driving stick in traffic is not difficult.

 

Maybe when you're talking about a econobox with entry trim, but less sure with the Tacoma in particular. We have a lot of enthusiasts in our ranks, judging by how many manual owners went hundreds of miles and out of state to procure their stick shift trucks, I'm not worried if I ever do sell mine.

 

I have to second this. The manual creeps so well in first that as long as I keep the spacing right I don't have to hit the clutch, most of the time in traffic. Even if you have to stop we're only talking about one extra foot movement compared to an auto to get going. In short, I've never found it to be a PITA to drive.

 

For me traffic is a PITA full stop. At least once I'm out of it and on a winding back road, I'll have a fat grin on my face while I leave the automatics behind with their brake fade and gear hunting.

 

Did you do a good test drive before you brought it. It seems to me you would have known about the shifting during the test drive

 

You won't get better gas mileage with the manual if your goal is to squeeze power out by shifting at higher rpms

 

He probably thought it would "break in" just like so many others here who preach it gets better with mileage...same as the "MPG improved with break in" misnomer that is promulgated here

Someone said its hard to resell a MT. I disagree. Your consumer base might be smaller but many mAny people pay premium for the 4x4 6MT that is hard to find
