I'd liken it to taking aspirin for the headache from a brain tumor, rather than treating the tumor. Banning a specific gun design just means that the next nutjob shooter will use something else. And then there'll be a big push to ban that. The sad truth of it is that the group of people who want to ban certain guns will always have a set of guns on their list that they want to ban, regardless of how many types or styles they've already banned. And it has nothing to do with the safety of the general public, as big 'P' prohibition flat out doesn't work; there will always be black markets for people who don't care about the laws. And there'll always be ways for sick people to kill innocent ones. The Columbine massacre took place during the federal AWB, so as a result they used guns that weren't considered AW's and carried more of the lower-capacity magazines. Ted Kaczynski used homemade bombs.
That's why I think that we shouldn't 'compromise' on gun rights; what are the prohibitionists giving up? Nothing. Therefore it's not a compromise.
These political resources would be better spent improving our mental healthcare system to see if there's a way to prevent or treat the people that are committing these crimes and to better enforce the laws that are already on the books.

However, this borders dangerously close to being too political for the CoC, so I won't say anything else on the subject.

I was not trying to get political's just the simple fact that after the recent mass murder now people are saying that the rifles are going to be banned so I was just asking a curious question.

I can understand the curiosity. The problem is that it's such a politically hot subject that there's really no answer that any of us can give that won't have political overtones. :notsure:

Other than "It's Bullsh*t!" of course, haha!

My dad just finished up this one. He's a high ranking state LEO and got it for a steal. I haven't seen it in person but now I want one. This is one of three for him.

What's the best route to get into an AR? Most of my guns are family guns handed down through generations. I don't own anything newer than 1965 and have only purchased one from a pawn shop several years ago.

My vote is to buy a lower-end model first. Most people end up customizing the crap out of theirs eventually, it seems like. So why spend a lot up front for parts you're going to be replacing at some point anyway?
I went with a S&W M&P Sport, but I was really tempted by the basic Ruger AR as well.
Obviously there's other schools of thought from guys with lots more experience. But from a fellow AR noob, that's my $.02

I've really been liking the Freedom Munitions 55gr Reman lately, to be honest. It's a little more $ than the steel stuff, but it's nice ammo for what it is.

My thoughts are they will go out of state and buy ftf. Same as they do with those dangerous 30 round banana clip magazine thingies.

$739 msrp. I've never bought firearms new. I've bought & sold music gear for nearly 20 years, and I've found street price to be 15-30% less than msrp on average. Are retail firearms the same?

Not really knopw. You might get a slight discount but if its still in clean shape and good working order its hard to get the price very low. Not to say it doesn't happen, but its a more rare occurance. Maybe 20 bucks cheaper.

    M&P sport is usually 550-600.
Street price usually runs ~10% lower than MSRP unless there's a large demand for that particular firearm.

I picked my M&P up for $599 shipped, plus the $25 FFL fee from my local gun shop.

They seem to be out of stock at my local shops.

Re: someone telling me to wait on my dad's stuff. Ha! He'd sooner be buried with them than let me shoot them. I don't get to drive or shoot his toys. His lesson to me was always "if you want something, work and buy it for yourself." He's vehemently against any notion of "handouts" of any kind.

I feared it'd cost around $1k to get ahold of one. I was hoping to see something around $700. Now you guys are sweetening the pot. Anything under $600 is attainable for me.

My wife asked earlier today what I wanted for Father's Day. I told her I'd take a S&W M&P15. She laughed and said "you're crazy."

??? you mentioned in you OP that all your guns where handed down generations...

Nothing wrong with kicking down to your kids, something very wrong with sticking your neck out after your kid does something wrong because you never taught them right in the first place. just my .02
